I am kind of laughing about that too. Also, for what it is worth even lived in Ridgewood/Bushwick after college with some friends! Coming from Upstate I sure did not feel all that comfortable.
I was not scared for my life or anything, but there was not a warm fuzzy feeling, lol. Actually I made my [now] husband break his agreement with the friends to stay there so that we could move. The eyes on me (and comments) as a well dressed young female as I walked from the subway did not leave me comfortable.
That said, I don't like to be around S. Pearl St either.

Oh, I'm sure it is! How can you even compare the two?
The Albany area's crime rate is pretty much on par for a city it's size. I think it's one of those metros that look worse than it really is...kinda like many of Upstate's metros due to the high urban vacancy rates.

Actually, NY metro's have some of the safest towns in the country. NY state is a middle of the road state in terms of crime rate, actually. It's not as bad as people think it is.

Having lived in the Albany area for a few years in the late 80s, the only area I found to really look "ghetto" at all by NYC or Philly standards was Arbor Hill and it was a pretty small area. Some parts of Troy looked a little bit "ghetto", though I recently was up in the area for the first time in years and it looked a little more so now.
But again, still seems very tame compared to NYC, etc. Just my thoughts.
Also regarding an earlier post about Saratoga vs. Amsterdam, Bennington, etc. being part of the "metro area" even though the latter two are closer to the Capitol, when I was up there I knew people in Bennington who commuted to Albany, and the same with Amsterdam, but the difference is that the area from Albany to Saratoga (especially the southern part of Saratoga County, like Clifton Park), has really grown because you have easy access to a major highway (the Northway, I-87), that doesn't involve a toll (unlike commuting from Amsterdam). Bennington involves a long commute on a 2-lane highway and you can get stuck behind a slow moving vehicle, a school bus, traffic lights in Troy, etc.
If you look at Albany's "sprawl", there's barely any south of the city due to lack of highway access, but lots going due north almost to Saratoga. Transportation is always key.
