Yeah I basically just gave you Albany and Saratoga stuff, but those are basically the two hearts of the area. Proctors in Schenectady has some stuff happening, but it didn't look too exciting.
How far in any direction from your base are you willing to travel? In addition to Wingsauce's suggestions (Saratoga really is worth a visit), there is quite a lot going on in the region. If you go online to the Times Union, they have an events section that spotlights mostly free events. You can also check the Metroland online. Both the Empire State Plaza and the Corning Preserve/Riverfront Park (which they have just renamed Jenning's Landing...please!!!), have free concerts. You can also pick up a complete list of music events on a convenient little wallet -friendly fold-out. They are available at area Price Choppers and cover free music thruout the Capital District.
The fireworks display at the plaza on the 4th is truly impressive. But the crowds can be a little much. Last year we made reservations at a nearby restaurant offering rooftop viewing of the display. So worth it! But restaurants in Albany change hands frequently, so call around. Taste, a bar/restaurant right downtown has a hopping patio with live music. Wednesday nights are popular and the age mix is nice....no one feels out of place no matter what generation you claim.
If you are into golf, check the local courses for charity tourneys...that's a popular timeframe for these events. Albany Muni, Winding Brook, Shaker Ridge are just a few that come to mind. Also, further out are the craft and antique fairs in Columbia & Dutchess Counties. If you check out any if those, make a little side trip to the walkway over the Hudson. Enter from either Highland on the west, or Poughkeepsie on the east. The longest pedestrian bridge over water in the northern hemisphere, offers great views with beautiful sunrises & sunsets.
