So, my husband and I moved to New Lebanon, NY (30 mins south of Albany, ny)about a year ago and have been exploring all around the region for houses. We absolutely love the mountains and are trying to find that mountain top location, but stay within our budget (let's say below 450K) we love where we are, including Chatham, Stephentown, East Nassau, etc....and we love some towns over the mass border, like Hancock, Lanesboro, Berkshire, etc. Once we find our ideal location, we are hoping to convert or build our home to as 'off-the-grid' as possible.
However, we have come to a cross roads where we don't know which state would be a better fit for us, since we have never owned a home in either state. What are the property tax differences. Does Massachusetts have tax exemptions, like NY has the Star program? How about military exemptions for either state?
Based on personal opinions, is working in NY and living in MA a poor decision or could it be beneficial?

NY definitely, if you don't have to live in MA don't live there, lots of wierd laws. Property tax is lower but everything else is higher. There is a reason why rven lots of Boston commuters live in New Hampshire and they don't call it tax-achussets for nothing.

Western Mass also has a lot of wierdoes and hippies and junkies.

Off the grid is illegal in MA btw.

Stay in NY

NY also has military exemption for disabilities and does not tax military retirement.

Eastern New Yorkers are more laid back as well, and have more class.

Don't you ever give up? As I have asked before...where are you since you dislike NY so much?

Why the anger? The Smoky's are a lovely place that would meet the OPs requirements. Many people just don't think of them.
