I loved Montreal big time and still do. However, the new Passport or EDL requirement, has probably slowed down travel from the Capital Reqion since I left there 3.5 decades ago.
Boston, rocks too, lots of water, cruises, sports and history.
NYC? Mixed feelings, every exciting, but also, very dirty in a lot of parts outside of Manhattan and Brooklyn's best parts, very crowded and the most expensive city in North America.
Philly, seemed ok, but I've only been there once and that was just Downtown and a couple of neighborhoods. Word of mouth, though, most of the time, people, don't like it. Anywhere North of Albany, it's usually more than 4 hours to get the Philadelphia too. Possible day trip, even though, it's a long one. Most distance sources, say it's only 20 more miles from Albany as Montreal is (220 vs. 240)
At least going to Montreal, you don't have to deal with Northeastern NJ traffic. But, a bad border wait, can make the actual time spent in the car, about the same as it is to Philadelphia, at least from Albany itself anyway.
Boston keeps rising to the top, but I have to recuse myself because I've never been to Montreal. Boston seems easier to get to and is not as intense as the other cities. You can just hang out by the harbor and Quincy Market and still get that big city feel without spending a lot to make it happen.
I used to live in Philadelphia and travelled to Albany and back frequently - 4 hours was a miracle. I would usually average closer to 5. There are some really nice sections of Philly, the running path along Kelly Dr. and the Museum of Art, for example. On the other hand, I understand the moniker - "Filthadelphia".
NYC has a similar vibe as Philly yet different from Boston. From Albany you're most likely taking the train down, which isn't really a big deal, but not as convenient as being able to drive your own car and park in a garage.
In the end, none of this is based on fact, they're all just feelings and vibes I get from each.

Philly in 4 hrs? More like 5 on a good traffic day.
Albany to Montreal may be 4 hrs, but Montreal to Albany is definitely more than 5 getting past the Border Patrol checkpoints on I 87.

Also, Boston parking is notoriously bad, so it basically becomes an issue of paying for parking in a lot or cruising for a while for a parking spot before taking the T in. Going to Manhattan depends on the Amtrak or driving to Poughkeepsie and taking metro north in. All of which adds cost and travel time.

Maybe I was being naive. Figured since the Newark area is 2.5 to 2.75 hours, well Philadelphia is about 1.15 hours from there.
Montreal is usually under 4, since, it was, when I lived in Saratoga, just under 3 hours from there, so add on another 40 minutes and there you go.
