Hi! My family and I are moving to Wilton soon. Sometimes I see my new address listed as Wilton, and sometimes as Gansevoort. I can't figure out what the difference is (and which one I should use!). The post office seems to recognize both as correct.

Thanks in advance!

I wonder if it is a matter of being located in one town, but having a zip code that is based in the other town. Sometimes you can have things crossover in that regard.

sometimes u can be in 1 town and be in a different postal district. As an example I use to live in Cambridge, NY, yet my house was the last house on my street for the Johnsonville post office, which was not even in the same township or COUNTY as the physical house.

Actually Gansevoort is a hamlet, not a town. The hamlet of Gansevoort is actually in the town of Northumberland, not the town of Wilton. Although post offices often use a different town/municipality in the address system, since they go by zip-code.

For example, Rt. 9 in Moreau is listed as Fort Edward zip-code or areas in West Glenville list an Amsterdam zip-code. I think as long as you have the correct zip-code you will be fine.
