The combined Albany/Rensselaer bid for Amazon's second corporate headquarters may have failed, but the Rensselaer waterfront is still being developed.

A four-story, 96-unit apartment complex going up across the Hudson River from Albany is the first new residential construction on Rensselaer's waterfront after more than a decade of planning.

The $20 million project, called de Laet's Landing by U.W. Marx of Troy, is made up of 1.3 million square feet of residential and commercial space on the 24-acre site. Eventually, it will include a hotel and boat docks — but it is taking a phased approach based on demand.

The one- and two-bedroom units will be leased for $1,190 to $2,150. Sizes range from 792 square feet to 1,492 square feet.

Next to de Laet's Landing is the newly-completed Hudson River Esplanade, a recreational space that provides public access to the waterfront. The $3.1 million, 1,000-foot-long esplanade was once part of a proposal from The Center for Economic Growth to use downtown Albany and the Rensselaer riverfront as the site of Amazon.com Inc.'s $5 billion HQ2.

The city said eventually the park will have full access to vehicles, a bike path, recreational opportunities and possibly outdoor concerts and events.

Check out the slideshow above to see the completed esplanade and the progress of de Laet's Landing.

Report: Rensselaer begins review of gondola plans

The Rensselaer planning commission is reviewing the proposal to create gondola service from Albany, according to the Times Union.

The company behind the proposal, Capital Gondola, said in its application that it has secured 80 percent of necessary funding from private sources for the $25 million gondola.

The proposed system would operate 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, with cabins arriving every 12 seconds, moving up to 3,000 passengers per hour. Preliminary estimates said hundreds of thousands of passengers would ride the gondola every year.
