A four-story, 96-unit apartment complex is open and now leasing on Rensselaer's waterfront.

The apartments are the first phase of de Laet's Landing, a development by U.W. Marx of Troy. It is the first new residential construction on the city's waterfront after more than a decade of planning.

The developer has approval to build 1.3 million square feet of residential and commercial space on the 24-acre site — including a hotel and boat docks — but is taking a phased approach based on demand.

The one- and two-bedroom units will be leased for $1,190 to $2,150. Sizes range from 792 square feet to 1,492 square feet.

U.W. Marx is trying to create a market for upscale apartments across the river from downtown Albany. Proximity to the waterfront, downtown and the Amtrak station — along with a rooftop deck, balconies overlooking the Hudson River, nine-foot-high ceilings, a fitness center and pet-friendly policies — are among the selling points for the new residential units.
