I always thought rent in Albany was so cheap! Did something happen in the past 2 years?

The region is growing. Nanotech is bringing people to work here. Albany's colleges are getting more popular (Pharmacy especially.) So rent is going up.

Dood .. rents are off the hook! Unless you want to live in crime ridden areas. Then you can find apt's that have been nicely remodeled, that will stay empty cause the landlord wants 'respectable' people in them. I've always been a good tenant but I can not afford the NYC rents wanted. Look at albany.craigslist.org/apa you'll see.

Key words in that quote .. ' bringing people to here'
Who gives a eff about the nanotech thing? I'm not getting a job there. It's not making my rent/car insurance/utility bills/gas/food or anything else go down. Another bunch of transplants making six figure or more salaries .. the same with the AMD plant up north. All transplant people. Most of the local people working there will be cleaning the floors and scrubbing the toilets.

I am going into the public administration field

You can stay here .. and administer the goverment cheese to the public. This state is going to implode on itself in the next 5-10 years. It hardly has the money to function now. The WASTE is horrid!

Its the opposite. This area is growing, money is leaving this area and the state at an alarming rate. Rent goes up due to over taxing the property owner for state/city/schools, thus passed on to the renter. Plus you have people from out of town that have no feeling for Albany other than to make a buck. So if they live in NYC they'll try and get a grab at that. For instance, tell me why an apartment on State St. below Lark but above S. Swan would go for $1500/mo. I'm sure you can't, neither can I other then these people must be doing some serious drugs!

There are buses, plenty of shopping, here in this area. I enjoy living in Sch'dy, regardless of the bad rap it gets. If you have specific questions about this area, feel free to ask.

You're gonna love it.
I think you'll like it. I have kids, and before we bought in Sch'dy we looked at several places in Scotia. I have a lot of friends w/kids in Scotia. I love the small downtown area, very walkable. Collins Park is nice w/it's playgroud, the water skiing shows this summer, movies in the park and of course Jumping Jacks. Indian Meadows park in Glenville, on Droms Rd. by the YMCA is nice; walking trails, new awesome playground. The Y is one of the nicest around. Gabriel's market downtown I've heard has some good deals. You'll also be near the Super Walmart, on Freeman's Bridge Rd. I heard a Lowe's will be built there soon too. The Lighthouse Restaurant is very nice on Freeman's Bridge. I think they have 2 menus, 1 is casual, 1 is formal, inside vs. outside overlooking the river. Glen Sanders Mansion is expensive but wonderful for a special occasion. I almost forgot the Scotia Cinema, nice and cheap. I hope you enjoy upstate NY. I grew up in the area thinking I'd move away and never come back. After a couple of years at college, jobs in big cities, when I had my first baby I came back. Please feel free to email me w/any other questions. You are moving to a great area during great weather. Enjoy the Adirondacks this summer if you get a chance.
PS I think for your kids there are tons of summer camps going on. The Times-Union had like 8 pages listed online. I know at least one is at Collins.
