I am going to be relocating to the area with my wife and two daughters 7 and 9 and am looking for an area with access to decent retail options, resturants, kid friendly with and entertainment along with of course good schools. I don't want to feel too rural. I will be working near the airport area and don't mind a commute that wont go over 40 minutes. One of the keys is a friendly welcoming community.

With the current housing market I need to sell in the upper midwest and while doing that work in NY so I will be in a temp housing situation. I want to rent in an area that I will eventually buy so I don't have to move my kids to a different school when I buy. Not too concerned with how much the rental is, but where it is is more important. Any thoughts, advice or suggestions would be of great help! Thanks in advance.

What type of neighborhood do you eventually want to live in? Rural, suburbs, semi-city, etc? There are a lot of possibilities near the airport. My dad worked in the same area for years and we lived in Niskayuna. The commute was easy, simply down Rt. 7. Maybe 10 minutes. Other towns that would be close are Latham, Colonie, Schenectady...Price of house, type of house, schools, etc also play a large role in picking an area. I know mostly about Niskayuna and Schenectady. Feel free to ask any other questions.
