Default Nice but cheap areas to rent in Albany

Hi everyone, I'm from Montreal and my girlfriend lives in NYC. We've been doing the long distance thing for a while, but planes cost 450 round trip and the bus or train takes 8-10 hrs each way. oh and I have a car and don't plan on buying one.

I've been toying with the idea of just renting a place in albany for weekends sat-sun so we could meet half-way. That way we could use vacation or long weekends to visit each other in MTL or NYC but still see each other on two day weekends.

So I was wondering if people here could suggest a starting point in Albany or surrounding towns? From what I've read Troy may be out of the question and greenbush should be nice.

What about Albany itself are there neighbourhoods to avoid? Also I would like to keep rent to less than 550.

Perhaps I should just get a car but with insurance, parking in NYC or MTL and of course gas . . . renting around albany may actually be cheaper . . .
