Movinng to Albany from California
Hi Everyone,
I am considering to move to Albany.NY from north California.
I hear that the winter is extreeme over there.I am never used to snow in California.
I am more a kind of person wanted to stay out of home as much as possible.I wanted to know the following.
1)What does people do in winter with so much of snow.
2)Do we have any indoor courts for sports like racquet ball.
3)how tough is it going to be in winter.
Regards
Ajith

Dood,
Get ready for culture shock! Answers to your questions in exact order:
1) hibernate and hang out in the malls.
2) nope! Only indoor thing I know of is hockey
3) thats a gamble. it can go either way. either really mild or hold on to your shovel!
As for Cali being highly taxed too .. you'll feel no pain when your money is needlessly stripped away from you to feed an over fattened and crumbling state government!
And just in case your wondering. I'm in Indianapolis now, moved out of Albany just 3 weeks ago! Best move I ever did!!

Check out other thread
There is another thread here from CA transplants who are terribly unhappy here and can't wait to get back to CA.

Keep an open mind, and you'll be fine. My wife who grew up in Silicon Valley misses the Capital District, even though we lived there only 2 years.
Generally speaking the area is well-equipped to deal with winter...lots of skiing very close by. Snow removal is not on par with that in the snow belt communities, but decent...you won't find yourself homebound due to poor roads unless you choose a very rural neighborhood.
All in all, the area is surprisingly cosmopolitan, with good restaurants...all that's lacking is a true natural foods supermarket (Whole Foods or Trader Joes).

I recently moved to the area from Fort Collins, Colorado. It wasn't the snow or cold that bothered me, just the amount of cloudy days this past winter. But I'm a weirdo and don't mind the snow. I plan on doing some snowshoeing and cross country skiing this winter.
One thing I noticed about Upstate is that there isn't a shortage of things to do if you know where to look. There are many beautiful state parks scattered everywhere and in the summer there is always some sort of a festival, concert or event going on nearby. You are close to so many things such as Boston and NYC, Maine and the rest of New England. There is A LOT of history around here to check out. The Adirondack area is amazingly rustic. There seems to be a great deal more to do around here, within just a few hours drive, than where we came from.

I lived in northern CA, and we did get snow. Most of the time it just melted away, but a few times we got a few feet. Once we got so much snow that we did'nt have power for a week. I never had that happen here in NY. When I lived in CA we spent a lot of time in Lake Tahoe, so we could go skiing. So far know one has told you about the beautyful weather we have in NY. The spring, summer and my favorit the fall. If you want to see the bad in the winter you will, but there is a lot more to NY then the winter.

I am trying to sell my house in the mountains of So. California. My eye is on upstate New York around Johnstown. The winters don't deter me; I am used to snow in the winter but I definitely want out of California. I have relatives in Virginia but love the country in NY. I would love to hear from senior citizens who live around the area of Hagaman or Johnstown.
