Thanks for everyones help. We were in the area this weekend temporarily and were questioning our decision on Saturday but yesterdays weather definitely made up for that and then some !
I've got some temporary housing lined up for about 3 months but we will begin to look for something permanent soon. We are a bit overwhelmed at the moment but hopefully working with a realtor will help.
Regarding accents, I really didn't notice a significant accent. I just hope mine isn't too Southern.

I just found out we might be relocating to the Albany area from Tennessee as well! The town is actually Selkirk, does anyone know what it's like there? We're just looking for a small house or townhouse, maybe even in Albany, just for the two of us and our dogs.

In contrast, I've heard a couple of people from Nebraska pronounce it "Al-banee"...similar to "Al Bundy". Now that sounds really, really weird. I think it's supposed to have a bit of an "awl" sound to it anyway. A better example of what I hear around this area might be "ball" sounding more like "bawl".

I doubt anyone will give you a hard time about it. Some of the folks that live in rural areas have a bit of a drawl anyway, probably because they listen to a lot of country music. This area is a hodgepodge of Canadian, New England, downstate accents, and native NYers that live in North Carolina who bring their newly acquired twang with them when they visit.
Best of luck with your relocation and getting settled. We moved here a year ago and really like the climate.

Thank you for that info, it's helped me figure out the region more. I guess it's pretty much the sticks, is there a good area of Albany? I don't mind the city, a townhouse downtown would be cool. Which are the good and bad areas?
