frogmed, I also think you'll be pleased with the road crews out here. I think back to growing up in Denver; how our residential streets hardly ever got plowed. It was like they'd clean the highways, then the main roads, & then hope that the good ol' CO sunshine would melt the rest. Usually that worked - but when we had a lot of snow or not a lot of sunshine, the residential streets would become these major hassles of ruts & frozen lumps - uggh!
Don't know what the budget is for snow removal out here - & a lot of local towns complained last year that they were running out of funds for salting sand mix - but for the most part the roads are kept pretty snow & ice free. You will have to watch for black ice now & then. Esp. with the odd hours you'll be driving, but there are a lot of 2nd & 3rd options for driving routes to the hospitals. For instance in my area (south colonie) I can get to AMCH in under 15 minutes via highway to New Scotland/85; or I can choose to go down Central, Washington, or Western Aves. & then cut over to New Scotland. I never take the highway if they say there's black ice. Still gonna slide on black ice on Central, just not at a higher rate of speed with a Quebecois trucker on my tail.... (no offense to our fine Canadian neighbors!)
I lived in the "hilltowns" of Albany - a very pretty area - for about 2 years while I worked at AMCH & St. Peter's. My commute time from Knox was about 25 minutes & a lot of the road crew fellas lived out that way too. So my road was always done first so those guys could get out to work! But I don't think your daughter would have as much fun at those schools as she would closer in...IMOHO

We too are looking at relocating to Albany from out-of-state. I've heard good things about Loudonville: nice family-friendly neighborhoods, excellent schools, etc. Is this all correct? Any part of Loudonville to look at in particular?
Also, are there any other areas (besides Niskayuna, that was mentioned earlier) that fit this description?

mellyva, IMO there is no unsafe place in Loudonville. There are a few streets of very small homes built in the 50's & 60's; a few areas of new development that are very nice; some average blocks with average homes - still very nice though; and a truly beautiful section of very high end, large older homes that look fantastic at the holidays. It is relatively small, and for the most part very affluent. It borders on Menands, which borders north Albany, which can be sketchy.
Loudonville is within the Town of Colonie which has a very good police dept. Loudonville residents are split between South Colonie & North Colonie school districts; the majority being in the North Colonie school district. Bethlehem & Guilderland schools have good reps too.

Although the towns and school districts mentioned are great - I want to mention don't forget the towns East of Albany such as Averill Park - home prices are currently much less here.

Yes - you are definitely right about that, averillparkre! In fact I like Rens. county everything hands down over anything in Albany county. Still lots to like about Alb. co., just a personal preferance.

Hey everybody thanks for the replies!
We ended up moving to Rochester, ny. We are hoping to move again soon. The place is nice in alot of respects, but with our options wide open, it's not working out as well as we had hoped. The taxes are insane! The crime is bad (our car got broken into last week, the day before we witnessed a kid get jumped by a dozen other boys inside of the restaraunt we were eating at(with our kids and newborn baby),homeschoolers have no freedom and I was actually told that if I didn't comply with their bullying, they'd call social services.. (this was on the initial phone conversation when I was only requsting the forms), it's illegal to not immunize on their schedul based on "philosophical reasons" aka, conscience/logic... The list goes on. We actually had to move from a house because the bank had taken ownership of it before we started renting it, and the agency gave us the keys anyway... So we were paying rent to them and it wasn't even theirs! And the only church with the traditional mass is in the worst neighborhood in the city. And they don't have a "crying room" so of your kids misbehave or are loud you have to take them outside. I don't even like my car to be out there, let alone my family.
We may be heading to MKE.
Will keep u posted! Famlife
Thanks again!
