English teacher. Looking for job. 2009 year.
Hello all,
I'm finishing my masters in teaching this year and I am looking for my first teaching job. My certification is 7-12 English. If anyone knows of any districts in need of English teachers, please help me out!
I am married so I cannot relocate for a job, but I am willing to commute pretty far. I'm looking for jobs in the surrounding parts of Albany, Saratoga, Hudson, lower Catskills, Kingston, most of Dutchess county, pretty much anywhere.
I look forward to teaching and hope I can start this up coming year. Thank you for your assistance.

HaHa, sorry.. finding an English job is just a little easier than SS- which I teach. Actually there were quite a few listings- surprisingly- last summer for English. 1st-- you have to be on the BOCES online system that most of the schools use (olasjobs.org). If you're willing to go a bit south, make sure you are checking that region on the olas system too- you'll see the map on the site. For Dutchess Co, however- most of those schools use the Dutchess County Boces website- which is totally different. So get on those 2 sites ASAP. Schools will start posting around March, with the big push in May after the budgets are voted. They try to hire before school is out. Then the final push is in Aug again- when everyone turns in their resignations who got better jobs!
Lastly, some of the schools--like Shenendahowa- DON'T use the olas system. I know Shen in particular, only posts to their OWN site. So, if you have some schools in mind check their websites regularly. Also, they may do job fairs- I know Shen does in early spring. Oh, last lastly... if you are just graduating- check w/ your education dept about the education job fair. Think it is April 1 or 2 at the Empire State Plaza. You have to pre-register. It's a nasty meat market, but worth a shot. You really can't line up interviews that day if you aren't pre-registered. Good Luck!
(oh, and tell anyone you know in education to keep an eye open- often postings are ONLY internal, so only those in district would know about them)

We happen to be in the Shen school district. A F/T teaching position is going to be hard to come by this coming year. They've announced a hiring freeze due to the NY state budget cuts. However, they're always looking for fill-ins for extended leaves(disability/maternity, etc).
My friend is a math teacher and has been having a hard time, but she's been able to work as a fill in. She was at Ravena and apparently, they will be laying off this year. Now she's got back to back leaves at Shen, so she's staying employed, but without the benefits.
Good luck in your search. It's a tough time right now.

You could try Doane Stuart School; they are moving to a larger facility for next Fall and may need more teachers: Welcome to the Doane Stuart School | Doane Stuart
Also, try all the charter schools in the Area: www.brighterchoice.org
www.kipptechvalley.org
www.albanyprep.org
www.henryjohnsoncs.org
www.albanyprep.org
Those should be enough to get you started. Good Luck!
