I used to work at both St. Peter's & Albany Med. Almost every department/floor had an employee area bulletin board where staff could post personal want ads & tear-offs. Don't know how far you are from Albany right now, but you might want to check out these boards & even post your own "wanted" ad.
Another thing you might want to do is check the same type of boards at Albany College of Pharmacy and the Law School across the street. I used to use both their libraries (quieter & more serious than the state college libraries ), and noticed both had "post it" boards just outside the library doors & campus centers.

Thanks, I wish I had known that when I was up there. I'll be sure to check those out when I get there. Right now I'm a litttle over 3 hours away. I have had some luck with Craigslist as well.

Even if there's a CDTA bus going from Cohoes to Albany Medical Center, I can't imagine it to be very convenient. It will probably take more than an hour each direction on public transport and it's been very cold lately. The misery factor may be very high. I would suggest finding something closer to the hospital. Unfortunately, the hospital in not in a very safe area. You could possibly stay in a hostel. I've never heard of this place but you can give them a call and see if they could meet your needs. It would be walkable to AMC.

Once you get started on your job, you may find some co-workers with more ideas.

Check with the Registrar's, Bursar's, or Dean's office at Albany College of Pharmacy, Albany Law School, or Albany Medical College. Don't just check the bulletin boards in the hallways. ACP (Pharmacy School) used to keep a folder stuffed full of info on potential apartments and rooms to rent.

Have you tried Craigslist.org? You can post what you need on there as well.

I would sugest The Best Western Hotel if you are going for a hotel. Pets are allowed and if you are a smoker there is a smoking floor where smoking is allowed in the rooms. Websight: Best Western Sovereign Hotel-Albany, Albany NY
Other than that heres a list of apartments in albany to call and ask for prices. Websight: Apartments - Albany, New York
Central Towers, a high rise on Central Ave in Albany is cheap from what I hear and its close to the hospital. Give them a call. (518-438-6834)

Thanks to everyone for their help. I have eventually found an apartment less than 1 block from the hospital. Not the best neighborhood, but it's only temporary.

Glad it worked out for you! It's not the worse neighborhood around. Seems great hospitals are usually in sort of bad areas. I've worked at a few and the area around AMC isn't the worse I've stayed.
Thanks for the update and good luck to you and moving your family!
