Thanks "rug city for those pictures. The mohawk Valley sure is one of the more pretty areas of Upstate. I am acutally in search of a better place Upstate where I can do better with my money while still staying in NY. I really do think the "valley area" will rebound but the economy still lags a bit at this point. But nevertheless, its still somewhere I'm looking into. C'mon back up and lets help fix it up.

Ah, I see, thanks. I usually have not taken the Thruway all the way to Albany, I would get off at 25A and just assumed the traffic was pretty heavy all the way into Albany from Amsterdam. Every time I have been in the Albany area, either on the Thruway or the Northway, the freeway traffic has been just beastly. Perhaps more of a stressful commute than a slow one - by my slow paced upstate standards!

It's funny no one has mentioned the Schoharie Valley -- Cobleskill, Schoharie, Central Bridge, Sharon Springs...
Dirt cheap compared to Saratoga and pricey suburbs like Niskayuna.
It's just off interstate 88 which connects you to the Thruway and Schenectady, Albany, Troy. About 35 minutes from my house to Rotterdam Shopping Mall, 40-45 to certain parts of Albany. Don't know much about Troy -- I went there once and almost couldn't get out because of all the one-way streets!!!!
Schoharie County is a well kept secret, I guess!!!! (Maybe that's a GOOD thing!)

NY or PA?
I am looking to relocate and trying to decided between central PA or the capitol region of NY (Scotia probably from what I've read so far). My husband will be retiring from the Army and we are looking for some military support facilities (heard that there is a commissary in Scotia as well), cultural offerings, good high schools, small town feel, etc, etc--basically everything I've heard about Scotia. My only concern is the cost of living there. Taxes in NY state are quite high from what my parents tell me. I think it now boils down to cost. Any advice?

Sure. Center Square historic district with Lark Street restaurants and clubs. Pine Hills has some beutiful homes, colleges and universities. Scotland Avenue/hospital area has some neighborhoods that are nice. And, there's a lot of efforts underway to improve and restore other downtown communities.

Need some input
My husband and I are thinking about moving to the upper New York area. We would like to be close to Albany, but not necesarrily in Albany. We need to know what the construction business is like there. He is a formsetter and would like to get back in the union. I will be graduating in May and would like to find a job working with at-risk youth. I need to know where to look. We have two kids, one who will be entering middle school and the other is still in elementary. We will need a middle school with a good music program. I wouldn't mind something with a rural feeling yet close to city amenities. Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks!

Regarding military support facilities, when we were at the Naval Support Unit Saratoga Springs to renew military ID, we were told they are going to build a commissary and expand the base there. I am not sure, but I thought they mentioned they would be moving the one from Scotia.

Ellwood-- hmm... that's an interesting piece of info about expanded military facilities in Saratoga springs. Did that include a gym, perchance? Thanks for the post!

Hello - Currently live off Exit 8 in Clifton Park, great older neighborhood, single family homes in low 200's. Taxes in Saratoga Co are great compared to Rensselaer or Albany, Schenectady Co. Location is close to everything.... within 20 mins of Alb/Schenec/Troy/Saratoga.
