Default Albany city brownstones for rent

My wife and I are looking to rent a brownstone in Albany city. Safety is important. We also have two small non-shedding dogs. Any suggestions on where to look for one, real agencies, private, etc. would be extremely helpful.

For the Albany area a lot of landlords do use Craig's List- and many post pics. Beware of the student areas (Pine Hills i think is the big one). Would have said Washington Park area was nice, till there was a shooting and lots of gang related fights recently. Also try Troy. Lots of beautiful brownstones there. Really revitalizing downtown... in recent years. I'd pick there first. Look on line at Times Union- in the neighborhood section- they often highlight those in features and I know they did a Troy neighborhood story in past year. Blanking out on the park in downtown Troy, but lots of brownstones around it, near Russell Sage College too. Know they did have a good loan program in downtown Troy a few years ago, not sure if it is still going. Look on the City of Troy website.

Why not try Albany suburbs? The city is going downhill terribly fast. I think the other guy who posted is looking at things through rose colored lenses. The minute I graduated I left that town in a hurry!
