From the article: "Downtown Schenectady has been tapped as the site for a new regional transportation hub designed to bring together multiple forms of public transit - such as buses, e-scooters and bicycles - in one centralized location.
The city’s upcoming “Gateway Mobility Hub” has been dubbed the first of its kind by the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA).
“With the confluence of all of our services, it’s the perfect location,” said CDTA CEO Carm Basile.
The hub will be located on the footprint of the former Adirondack Trailways bus station at 22 State St., which was razed last fall.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer formally made the announcement on Monday in a visit to downtown Schenectady.
The top-ranking New York Democrat said he hasn’t been shy in using his new-found clout to steer federal funds to the state, including $296 million in emergency coronavirus relief to CDTA, which took a financial beating as ridership fell during the pandemic.
“This is truly a transportation transformation,” Schumer said to a crowd of local dignitaries and CDTA workers.
The Gateway Mobility Hub has a $5 million price tag, with the federal government picking up 80 percent of the tab. The effort will also upgrade lighting and sidewalk infrastructure around the location, which is across from SUNY Schenectady Community College.
Basile said officials had been kicking around the idea of a transit hub for years before funding became available through the $1.2 trillion federal infrastructure bill passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden last fall."
