Though also, we must look further than just numbers at Saratoga. While it's true that Saratoga has more Republicans than Democrats, I would not by any means call it socially conservative.

Saratoga Springs: We vote Republican because we're rich but we're fine with gay marriage, abortion, etc.
Burlington: Even though we're rich, we vote Democrat because we're limousine liberals.
Glens Falls: We vote Republican federally because we're uneducated/we vote Republican state-wise because we don't want NYC to have too much power, but in our defense we're also the most "unspoiled" and quiet of the three.

That's why I offered up Plattsburgh, which had an openly Gay mayor(Daniel Stewart) not too long ago that was also a Republican ironically. The Press Republican - Ex-mayor lobbies for gay-marriage bill

It has a couple of colleges, a city beach, proximity to the Adirondacks and Montreal too. Burlington is a ferry ride across Lake Champlain too.

Classic liberal post. People in Glens Falls vote Republican because they're stupid.

Liberals are the most intolerant people in the US.

I don't classify myself with any political party because it is a waste of time, but I consider myself extremely liberal, and I have lived and traveled all over the world. Let's see some evidence or statistic explaining your stance on liberals. I think people who conjecture and classify others are "stupid". That goes for both sides.

Oops. Sorry, it is hard for me to not reveal my political biases. I don't think all Democrats are smarter than all Republicans, or that one is automatically smart and the other automatically dumb. Sorry bout that Although re-reading my post, I dissed Burlington liberals as badly as I dissed Glens Falls Republicans imo.

There's no need to apologize, it's just that City-data.com drives me crazy with the politics. It is a huge waste of time. Our country is in too much trouble to be taking sides. We should be working together instead of starting a political war. I am not a Democrat BTW, but my philosophy on life is very liberal.

I brought up the whole Democrat/Republican thing just so I give you some rough statistics. I wasn't sure what you've heard of Burlington but it has a reputation for being a liberal community while small Upstate NY cities, such as Saratoga Springs or Glens Falls, are typically moderately conservative.

I'll put in another vote for a closer look at Plattsburgh. Burlington and Montreal give you plenty of opportunities for culture and nightlife an hour away, and Plattsburgh is really easy to get around in, is a lot cheaper than Burlington, more progressive than Glens Falls (in the city of Plattsburgh, anyway) and has all the basics.
And pretty inexpensive to keep a boat on Lake Champlain here, besides.
