That brown color is red clay washing down from the Jemez mts. I'd have to say the Rio Grande, in NM is pretty harmless. As far as I know there is no dumping of pollutants anywhere up river.
You do have to remember there are areas of quickening sand. Not quick sand
Just quickening sand. The river runs above ground as well as below ground. You can step in a spot that causes panic because you begin to sink. Don't ask me how deep because I've never been brave enough to find out. You just have to start moving and keep moving until you're on more solid ground.
