I will have to choose neighborhoods careful, I guess, but there are few guarantees.
You just need to buy a house that offers some distance between you and your neighbors (maybe buy an acre or so). It's hard to avoid noise when you're right on top of each other as is the case in so many neighborhoods.

I forget.

Mike?

Is that sprawl if you've got an acre of land around you?

Naw, an acre or more qualifies as "exclusive".. anything a quarter acre or less is "sprawl"...

And then, she went on to tell horror stories (in her opinion) of the previous tenants (yes, it's a rental). We have had no more interaction with her, except for the one time my son went down the sidewalk on his skateboard. She promptly pulled her car out to block the sidewalk so he couldn't pass in front of her house.

That sounds psychiatric more than anything else, seriously. Not normal comments to make to a stranger if you are sane, albeit angry at the world.

Wow, I feel pretty lucky after reading some of these posts. I'm in an area where it's mostly rentals for about 4 blocks, but even so, I know some of my neighbors. Sharing a wall is my landlord, grumpy but really nice guy. Next triplex over is a single mom with kids, don't know her name but the kids are a hoot and came over a couple of times this summer when they had minor emergencies (glad to help). Several neighbors ride the bus at times, we all know each other and chat - some are renters, some are homeowners on the next street back. Three doors down has a gorgeous flower garden in front of his unit, that's his summer hobby. There's the late night couple who are always sitting outside when I go for a late night walk (I think they smoke outside). Nice folks, we've chatted. Guy next door has 2 big dogs, but they're fairly quiet. He was startled when I said hi to him the first time, but he's come around and chats some now. Some days I even get a smile out of him

Nope, no complaints on my neighbors.

We have been leasing over the past 20 years when dh was active duty Army. Great neighbors everyplace except for one place in Anchorage for 9 mos (we lived in that same condo for 11 years.... a nut case who happened to be a PA who got in trouble with the law after assaulting a cab driver with his doctor 'boss'). The nut case experience for 9 months with dealing with his weird eccentricities taught us to never live in condo again! All other experiences in Anchorage and other places were great including E NM! We've been lucky.

We have two military families across the street from us currently and I must say they are some of the best neighbors I've ever had. Two awesome families I will miss immensely when they inevitably leave....

A few words to describe my neighbors: judgemental, old, aloof, racist, boring, white trash, hippie, poor, unfriendly, weird, creepy.
