I'm considering a move to ABQ in the next few months and was hoping I could get some info on outside activities. I've been able to read posts about skiing, hiking, etc. and have seen a few on lakes and fishing. However, I didn't find anything on here regarding hunting so:

1. Are there reasonably decent public hunting areas near (w/in 1.5 hours or so) ABQ for deer/elk/goat?

2. Same for quail, ducks, and rabbits (I don't need to know exactly where you go unless you want to give generallities - I just want to know if these areas exist)?

3. I understand Cibolo is around the corner and elk are supposed to be good but what is the access like? What about for horses?

4. Just to make sure I understand what I've read before, a little north of ABQ there are several rivers that contain trout?

I've looked on the state Wildlife site but its not very helpful on anything other than regulations and other websites are mostly just advertisements for guides. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Reasonably decent is in the eye of the beholder. Never heard of goat hunting, but deer and elk can be had in about that radius. Probably better than, say, New Jersey; probably not as good as Utah. Heading another hour out is that much better.

Not aware of much of any of those. Hunting things like feral pigs, coyotes, and javelinas are options, but probably 2+ hours out of ABQ.

Cibola National Forest, you mean?
I'm sure you can find spots..

Yes, that's true.

State Game & Fish would probably have much of that. Also BLM (bureau of land management) may yield some info.

Thanks for the reply. Goats = speed goats = antelope. It's too bad if there aren't birds around b/c it's my primary and favorite hunting. Yes, I meant Cibola--as you can see from my signature I have a spelling deficiency. Actually, neither the state game and fish site nor the BLM site were all that helpful. They can tell you a little about availability of public land but not about what is actually on the land.

Regardless, there are many other things ABQ has going for it, this is just something I couldn't learn from visiting (and isn't a deal breaker).

Deer hunting certainly within 2 hours. If you bowhunt, you can even enjoy the short season in the Sandias (bus-access hunting!).

Elk permits are by lottery.

There is a pronghorn season too but I don't know much about it. Most that I have seen are on the NE plains about 3 hours+ out of Albuquerque.

Dove and Quail are popular on the east plains. Don't know much about waterfowl hunting in NM. Most wetlands are protected, wildlife refuges due to their rarity.

There is some trout fishing in northern NM, mostly pretty small fish in narrow cold streams. Trophy fishing is in the San Juan river near Farmington. That is not a day trip from Albuquerque unless you plan to make a really long day out of it.

This I would dispute. NJ and adjacent areas of NY and PA offer some of the best hunting I know. Lots of game within a short drive of New York City. The only issue there is land access. While there is plenty of legal land to hunt on in New Mexico, the density of game is much smaller. If you want to see a deer in New Jersey, look out a window :-)

I don't know too much about the hunting around Abq., but in Carlsbad, NM you can drive five minutes and be hunting deer or whatever.

I am, however, an avid fisherman.

The Jemez area is about 60 miles away and has many miles of streams and a couple lakes all containing lots of small trout in a nice mountain setting.

The Pecos area is about 90 miles away and may offer slightly better fishing. Still beautiful, high country streams there.

The San Juan is 200 miles away and is world class tailwater trout fishing.

The Chama river has many miles of varied fishing trout fishing and is anywhere from an hour and a half to three hours away depending on where you go. Some big fish there. Below Abiquiu reservoir is good and below El Vado reservoir is better.

So you do have to drive a bit. I moved to Colorado Springs for the fishing. I can fish for trophy sized trout 50 miles away and I have many miles of fantastic river to choose from here.

The dog days of summer will all but cook the trout in NM, so fall and winter is best.

Good luck!

Why not just call it "killing"?. Then there would be no misunderstanding as you are probably not house killing or job killing. Did I misread, or do you want to "hunt" horses too?

Because the primary definition of 'hunting' is stalking and killing animals; it implies pursuit which, in turn, implies a quarry that moves and/or evades.

When houses and jobs move about of their own accord and people who want shelter and work have to track them, then we can call those activities hunting, too.

Or were you just posting here to make a socio-political statement?

Thanks everyone who has contributed so far--I really appreciate the input and although the opportunities seem a little limited as far as "outdoorsman" activities the positives in other areas are starting to be overwhelming.

Alinka, unless you're a vegetarian/vegan you have no moral standing to question my hunting. Hunting (or fishing) is the ultimate "local" food option. Just because I think it's fun to be in the outdoors and harvest my own game doesn't make me a sociopath. Any of the elk, rabbit, or quail, I hunt will run you about $25/pound at Whole Foods. Additionally, they are the ultimate "free range" meats. One of the reasons I mentioned trout in my question is because its one of the few landlocked fishes I like to eat. The elk that will provide me protein for half a year never spent anytime on a feed lot and probably lived a pretty good life. Additionally, I'm not hunting anything that isn't "hunted" in the wild. All of the "critters" I mentioned are prey to other animals and whether you want to accept it or not humans are innately predatory creatures too--even if we express it in different ways.

I'm not a right wing nut job bringing loads of guns to town to blow stuff away. In fact I have a pretty blue collar democrat background (with some decent formal education mixed in). I'm not a Ted Nugent all-out hunter freak. It's something I occasionally enjoy doing in my spare time. As far as the animals are concerned, they probably lived a much better life and had a better death than the cows at McD's or the elk who is eventually torn apart by bears or cougars.

If you are a vegetarian we have a difference of opinion that you can complain about and that many of my friends share. But, all life on this planet grows from, and at the expense of, other life on the planet sooner or later--I think we could only disagree on where the balance lies.

Also, I don't hunt horses. I occasionally hunt on horseback.

To ABQConvict,

Yes, this was a socio political statement. I think of the canned hunts where Bill Richardson killed (and I stand by that word) killed the ornyx (sp) and it was documented with him standing proudly with this animal. I also think of Osama Bin Laden and his lions, fenced in and shot by target practice, also called hunting. I call it killing in both examples.

randomtraveller,

Yes, I am of that orientation. I do eat scallops, shrimp, and eggs and consume dairy. I have eaten no flesh for many years, at least 20. I mean no argument in the sense that hunting, killing, whatever one may call it is legal. That does not mean I think it is right.

I certainly agree with statements about the fate of factory farmed animals.

I have read articles stating that the best we can do for the planet is to patronize humane farms for meat. If I was tempted to eat flesh I would go that route, but I am not.
