Just to clarify somewhat, Jemez Springs (pronounced HEY-miss) is pretty far from Madrid, although it is definitely worth seeking out. As harry o mentioned, Jemez is about 30 minutes north of Rio Rancho separated from Madrid by some good sized mountains. Would hate for you to get all the way there and not find what you were looking for!

Have fun exploring!

fb1527 is on a distinguished road
Hi! After reading these posts, I am so encouraged about my decision to leave Pittsburgh and take my family to ABQ, NM. I want my children to have access to the outdoors, enjoy weather and meet friendly people. I need to see beautiful things around me. I have no idea how I'll pull this off but I'm praying and trying my best. Lived in PGH all of my life and I HAVE to go-can't take it any longer. I fear leaving a good salary and home ownership but I'll give it all up for peace and beauty. Any information on how I can make this move possible by Feb '08 would be so helpful to me. Thanks!

I think that is awesome! Congrats on your decision! We've basically done the same thing. We load up our truck tomorrow and head out for the nearly 2000 mile journey on Friday! Where there's a will, there's a way!

Keep in touch!

I agree with Harry O, you absolutely need to take your daughter to ABQ Uptown.

It is just down the street from Coronado Mall. I hope you enjoy it here!

fb1527 and veggggies welcome to the Duke City and the Land of Enchantment. I am quite sure you will enjoy it here.

fb1527, I would start looking at houses, if love the outdoors, great places to look for house are the Sandia heights, North Valley, Placitas, and Corrales. I wish you the best of luck!

Chynna is on a distinguished road
Hi, I am moving back to Albuquerque, I grew up in Arizona and frequented Albuquerque a lot growing up. I moved there with my mother when I was in my second year of high school, I was unsure if I'd like it but I ended up meeting some of the most interesting people. I absolutely love going to the river (Rio Grande) there are tons of bike trails along side it and as much as most people will tell you the river is dirty, I loved to swim in it too. The summers are wonderful, and the nights are warm and perfect. The winters don’t seem to last very long, and if you like a lot of snow it probably isn’t the place for you. Well I guess except for this last winter which had more snow fall then Albuquerque has seen in many years. If you travel about two hours towards Arizona there is a great road that has some of the most beautiful mountain views, the rocks are so close to the road its beautiful. Also if you drive an hour out side the city to the Haymes (Not sure if I spelt it wrong) but it has natural hot springs and tons of trails and great camping grounds. You might encounter some naked visitors, but other then that the hot springs are defiantly something I would recommend seeing and experiencing. Also it could just be me but the people that live there are genuinely nice people (obviously you can encounter the road rager and the city does have gangs. But I lived there for over four years and I went all over that city even to the places where gang activity is more prevalent and I always felt safe. If you are looking for a place to live please look into the Westside. It’s about a good 15 min from the heart of the city depending on where you’re coming from, but it has everything great shops, restaurants, a new mall, and the cities best public schools, and the best part it’s very safe. Also if you like quieter environment try Corrals, the main street has a 30 mile's per hour max, and it is defiantly a place you do not want to speed. But it has a lot of land and open spaces plus great restaurants that you have to look for and some really great spas, it’s also probably one of the greenest communities because it’s located very near the river, Corrals connects to the Westside. The best part of Albuquerque is it takes maybe 45 min to an hour at the most to get from one end of the city to the other and even though it’s separated by names in truth it all feels very connected. I live near Detroit now and this place is so massive I feel so disconnected from the rest of the city not to mention the fact that 8 mile is real. Well I myself am moving home in October and I couldn’t be happier. I don’t know what I was thinking leaving and if you have any questions ever please contact me via email at chilee05@hotmail.com

I agree I-40 west is one of the most beauitful drives anyone can take. It is full of gorgeous red rock, volcanos, and plateus. Amazing.

It is called the Jemez! Not the Haymes (though that is how it sounds)

corrales is a very nice suburb, and i have considered moving their several times from my house in the NE heights.

I knew I was spelling it wrong, I too would love to live in Corrals but unfortuantly as a struggling student I think I may have to wait a couple years. The NE heights are beautiful as well, really albuquerque has a lot of great places to live. Really thanks though for telling me how to spell it right you'd think after living there for so long I'd know that oops
thanks
Chynna

Thank you all! I have printed out four pages so far, and if you have more suggestions, please let me know! I am highlighting the places recommended, and am looking forward to the trip. It's great to hear from people who really know a place instead of just reading a guide book!!
We leave in a week, so if you have any other things to add, it's definitely appreciated! Thank you!

fb1527: If you can't find a house and would consider renting for a bit, I could recommend a nice apt complex. It's called La Ventana, located up where Academy meets Tramway. Beautiful views, well-kept grounds, nice area. Also it's in a decent school district, if you would need to rent for a bit.

I have a feeling you may like the movie Off the Map, with Sam Elliott and Joan Allen. it's about a 70's NM family that lives off the map. Lots of peace and beauty, great story line...
