Tucanos has really gone down hill since they first opened.

Kellys
Go for Kellys brewpub on Central if you don't have to drive afterwards. After sampling a few of their stronger craft brews, it doesn't much matter what the food tastes like! (even though it is generally pretty good)
Los Quates on Lomas for medium sized parties, the newer one serves mixed drinks but the older one only does beer and wine. If you want "Mexican" food for larger parties try Gardunios. If you want New Mexican food for large parties definately go for El Patio even though its quite a drive.
Saggios for pizzia or pasta, right across the street from the Frontier on Central.

Just a few replies:
Vpuccetti: I can't say I've ever had a bad meal at Scalo, and I wouldn't consider them overpriced. I suppose we can agree to disagree.
HEATHER72: I would agree that Tucanos has faded since it first opened, but I think most would find it to be a unique experience.
rotorhead: I would whole-heartedly agree with the recommendation of Kelly's. I must have had a brain fart to not include it in my original list. I'm also partial to the O'Niells Irish Pub just down the road. Thanks, I now have a craving for their "Burger in Paradise". Good stuff...

I'm appreciating all of these good suggestions--I haven't been to many of them!

Restaurant Antiquity
It's my friend's birthday next week (the Big Five-Oh). We're headed out Thursday evening to celebrate, and I'd like to take her somewhere nice (it's on me). I love the menu I found on-line for this place, and since she's not superfond of New Mex/Tex Mex/any Mex food, I know she'll like this place (and it's in my budget). Only concern, it's advertised as a "romantic" evening. Uh, we're buds, but not that kind. Will it work for two middle aged ladies out for a nice dinner? We're doing the New Mex stuff Friday, with another friend.

I really love Frontier. It offers great food, it is cheap and open 24 hours. I used to get a kick out of watching those tortillas being made right in front of you. Truly a landmark.

I live way to close to the Frontier for my health. Sometimes, I confess, I find myself eating a green-chile cheeseburger and fries at 3am in my slippers.
That's how I roll.

These would be my favorite recommendations for guests from outside Albuquerque:
- Casa de Benavidez (New Mexican - Very nice patio)
- El Pinto (New Mexican - Also a very nice patio, or the "Fireplace" room)
- Great Land & Cattle Company (Best Value in Steaks, Indian School @ Tramway)
- Rancher's Club (University Hilton - $$$$$$! But the steaks melt in your mouth. Superb service too.)
- Antiquity (Old Town)
If it were just my "favorite" Albuquerque restaurants, we have so many wonderful, "Mom & Pop," and "Hole in the Wall" places too. Some of which have been mentioned previously.
