I live in western Colorado but visit friends there 3 times a year. For breakfast, it's the Owl Cafe, and for lunch it's Taco Sol at Eubank and Menual. The Owl is on Eubank, just a little north of Interstate 40.

Good call on the Owl on I-40 and Eubank. Good stuff. Supposedly not as good as the one in San Antonio, NM (never have been to that one) but I always really liked the one on I-40 and Eubank.

I have not been able to ever make it to Taco Sol but saw it all the time. Interesting. Another I was interested in hitting was Juan's Broken Taco.

Correction
The establishment at Eubank & Menaul is actually Taco Sal. It used to be one of my favorites many years ago, but it took a downturn in quality (new ownership). Haven't been there for quite some time, but perhaps they have "righted the ship"?
Another spot in this area (kitty corner from Taco Sal) is Papa Felipe's. Its been a fixture there for years, and the food is OK. It just pales in comparison to the "bigger" names (Sadie's, Casa de Benavidez, Loc Cuates, etc.).
One place that I haven't seen mentioned (and is somewhat lesser know around town) is the Albuquerque Tortilla Factory (2 locations in ABQ). Many people don't realize that they have small restaurants located on the premises. Limited hours, but EXCELLENT and affordable New Mexican food. They also sell refrigerated/frozen New Mexican foods including tamales. Almost that time of year! (Sorry EnjoyEP! )

Ah, you are right Chaparral, I should have (and I think deep down did) known that...Taco Sal. I can still picture the pinkish, bluish sign.

You are indeed breaking my heart Chap. Tamales at Christmas are just an amazing treat. I never had the pleasure yet of doing ABQ Tortilla Factory, but I will have to some time. We are NOT acting like we'll never be eating tamales in ABQ for Christmas again...once the kiddies are a little more school age, we're going to the Southwest again - 2.25 years max! In the meantime, I still have some distant relation and friends in ABQ...I might have to have them pick up some tamales at ABQ Tortilla Factory, put 'em on ice, and ship them on up to MKE!

So glad to hear you enjoyed your evening @ Rest. Antiquity! My wife loves their Henry IV (filet mignon) while I'm partial to the Pork Normande. We usually go there for special occasions, and always enjoy the food & service.

I agree, the Albuquerque tortilla factory makes great food. Their frozen tamales are tremendous.

Hey, where are they located. I'd love to check them out.
One thing I've noticed: over the years one tends to cull their restaurant options down to a few favourites and I haven't strayed from mine (as far as New Mexican) in a looong time.

I got a kick out of your post, as I've had a real love-hate relationship with Blake's ever since I was a kid. Typically, I eat at the one down on Washington, and have had the fewest mistakes made with my order at that location (excluding the one in Deming's - ate there all the time when I was going to school in Tucson and traveling back and forth between there and ABQ - definitely the best Blake's I've eaten at in the state).
To add my two cents on some of the food in ABQ:
Taquería Mexicano on Lomas downtown - awesome southern Mexican style tacos with lime wedges and cilantro, especially with a Mexican Coke (no high fructose corn syrup - plain ole sugar instead).
Padilla's on Girard - only takes cash, and has some strange hours but so incredibly good, often jam packed.
Most of my other favorites have already been mentioned. I really love the food in Albuquerque, and I have eaten some fine food in a lot of much larger cities (Seattle, LA, NYC, Vancouver, etc.). We don't necessarily have the level of high scale food as other cities, nor the range to choose from, but we have some great local flavor here.
