I will be relocating to ABQ from Austin in the early spring (2012) & want to find an apartment that I will be happy living in for a couple of years (until I get ready to buy another home). What is important to me is: 1) spacious; 2) good views of mountains/desert (this is why I am moving); 3) walking distance from outdoor trails for hiking, etc. So far I have been looking online (will be going up to NM soon to investigate further) and the ones that look best are Broadstone High Desert, Las Mañanitas & the Pavillion in Northeast Heights. I don't care too much about the drive because I have control over my schedule & generally won't go into work during rush hours. Any thoughts on these choices or any other recommendations? A pool that you can really swim in (e.g. laps) would also be a real plus. Thanks!!

Broadstone High Desert meets all of your criteria (except maybe the lap pool). It's a nice complex in a beautiful area, with hiking trails practically outside your front door. I would highly recommend. Try to get an apartment with mountain and city views. The sunsets here are spectacular, and city views from the foothills at night are stunning.

P.S. You don't really have to worry about rush hour here. Traffic is a breeze compared to Austin.

There is San Miguel Del Bosque on the west-side. They have trails leading out to the bosque and river. But depending on where they would give you a unit you might not have view of the mountain.

I so appreciate the responses! Actually, all the apartments mentioned are ones that I have appointments to see next week, so hopefully, I will find something that feels just right! I can't wait to make the change!

I moved out here six years ago and rented at the Tanaon apartments on Tennyson St. NE(Academy and Tramway). Loved it there(exercise room, pool, spacious place) Was in a building at the very end, right next to dried out reservoir, which is a great place to walk, in or along the top of the berm. It provides perfect views westward to Mt. Taylor. Great spot to see the mass ascension during balloon fiesta. Plus, you're very close to the entrance to Elena Gallegos picnic area/trails in the foothills.
