Hi, I live in Phoenix. I'm going to Albuquerque on business in a couple weeks and am new to the southwest. I'm driving, need to stay at a Marriott afiliated hotel in Albuquerque and will probably stop for a night along the way with my family. Does anyone have suggestions for the following??
1. Restaurants, along the way or in Albuquerque -- I like hole in the wall Mexican places, hole in the wall places in general, and brew pubs
2. Best area of town to stay in -- someone recommended downtown to me. Anyone know a Marriott around there?
3. Best place to stop for a night along the way -- any oddities? aren't there some hippie commune style towns along the way?
What part of town do you need to be in RE hotel? I wouldn't stay in downtown unless that is where I needed to be, although at the intersection of Central and I-25 is a very nice business class hotel (Parq Central) that I recommend (but not a Marriott).
I have also stayed at the Marriott Residence Inn off Carlisle at I-40, and I liked that location a lot. Very central, good access to all parts of ABQ.

Close to the Isotopes ballpark. Thanks for the ideas!
Sedona is easily on your way to Albuquerque and worth the detour (if only one way).
The Grand Canyon is a bit of a detour, but it's not close to anywhere else, and everybody should see it at least once.
Flagstaff, meteor crater, petrified forest are all right off the interstate.
Not a whole lot worth seeing on the NM side of the border that can't be seen from the road.
Note that if the OP is heading from the East Valley (Mesa/Chandler/Gilbert/Tempe), it may actually be faster to take the route through Payson rather than through Flagstaff. My brother who lives in Rio Rancho takes this route when he comes to visit us in Gilbert. The segment of AZ 87 from Payson to Mesa has been widened in recent years, thus reducing driving time.

The Fairfield Inn near Menaul and University which was mentioned is the closest Marriott-affiliated hotel to the ballpark that is not located at the airport. It's about 3 miles from Isotopes Park, which is located on University and Avenida Cesar Chavez.
The actual Marriott hotels in Albuquerque are further away. You have the Albuquerque Marriott in Uptown and the Marriott Pyramid North in the North I-25 area of town.
There are no Marriott-affiliated hotels in Downtown Albuquerque.
Here is the listing of all the available hotels in Albuquerque on the Marriott website:
That's not a bad idea. Have always been curious about that place. Anything specific to do there on a quick overnight?
The El Rancho Hotel was built in the 20s or 30s to service all the Westerns being filmed out there and is pretty fun and quaint...the rooms are all named after the golden-age movie stars who stayed there. I think that's pretty much it for memorable lodging in Gallup. In terms of things to do, downtown Gallup is fairly famous for its trading posts and Native American handicraft shops...it's a lot of fun to browse around even if you don't plan to spend any money. If you're there on the weekend, the Gallup Flea Market is famous for Native American food and handicrafts as well as people-watching.
