Moving to Albuquerque? Read this! (Las Cruces, Alamogordo: lawyer, travel, job)

WOW This is a great discussion! I grew up in Albuquerque, and I am doing the research before I think about moving back. I have not been back to spend quality time in close to 10 years. I will spend Monday hanging out with an old friend, and just looking around. I have a interview on Tuesday in a dealership that is talked about all over the world. I now live in San Antonio, Texas, and have since 1992. My wife has looked around here on the web at statistics and what not, and keeps telling me that Albuquerque is not what it used to be. I look forward to hanging around, seeing the deep blue sky, mountains, incredible sunsets, and eating some good Mexican Food. I am at a point in my life where I do not care for where I live, but it is up to me to make a change.

Your racism, and ignorance makes we wish your "reputation" rating could be determined, not by how many posts (rants) you've put on City-data, but rather by how the readers of City-data could "rate you!"

You're in Minnesota, home of all those dumb Swedes who still say, "Ya Shoore!" How does Minnesota stand such people? They should be deported!

I have been looking around on City-Data all day now. I have read this entire thread, and a lot of the other threads where people are talking about moving TO Albuquerque. I also looked in the San Antonio Texas threads. I have only looked at the first page, but nobody is talking about moving to San antonio from anywhere. I wonder why?

I completly agree about that TEXAN part! HA. I also agree that I think Albuquerque has only gotten nicer, and it hasn't at all taken a turn for the worse. Granted with Growth, Worse Traffic has come with it. Other than that, unemployment is low, streets are now landscaped or are going to be landscaped. Several companies are moving here or are starting here. Albuquerque is booming and getting bigger and better all the time. Crime has actually decreased. The School system is making progress. I think you will be surprised at the Albuquerque you see when you come to visit.

BTW ExpressJet offers non-stop flights between Albuquerque and San Antonio. ExpressJet I tried them a month or two ago and I really enjoyed my experience for the most part.

Just stumbled on this board now that we are thinking of getting a second home in the Southwest. Albuquerque was high on the list because of the moderate climate and location, but now I am quite concerned about the crime factor. I know it's all relative, but it's important for us to find a place where we can take reasonable precautions and take off for six months and go back to Nebraska. What parts of Albuquerque are "safer" and friendly to 50+ "snowbirds"?

Wow.. what an interesting thread.

Albuquerque has a strongly Hispanic cultural vibe (though it is WAY more "American" than where I grew up (NYC). I like it. It was a consideration of mine when I chose to move here for University in 1990.

Why is it that when a white person wants to accuse someone of being racist, they emphasize how non-racist they are by putting down anyone who doesn't want to immerse themselves in a different culture.

i.e. "As a white person, I find white people boring and would never consider living in a booooring white state like <insert boring white state here>. If you don't like tejano/mariachi music, chile ristras and low-riders, then you are racist."

On the New York board there are many posts concerning the desire of black people to find a good middle-class black neighborhood to move to. People of all races give their input and no one accuses the poster of being racist.

When a town in New England develops a small core of Hispanics over a period of years, the town will often experience a surge of new Hispanics who want to live in a town where they can find familiar foods, spanish music/books, and spanish speaking company. Are they racist?

I think Lukache's post was dubiously worded, but many of the (knee-jerk) responses were even more disturbing.

Regarding Espanola (and other NoNM towns): I have been warned by more than one New Mexican with roots in Northern New Mexico that Espanola can be cold-shouldered or even outright hostile to Anglos (though there is an Anglo pop. there). I have personally been chased out of Cuba, NM (they followed me as far as the turn off to Cabezon (about 30 miles of empty desert), honking and flashing guns at me the whole way. My crime? I wouldn't give the guy a cigarette and I'm an Albuquerqean (i.e. not local).

To Boji: Most parts of Albuquerque are as safe as any comparable city. If you search around this forum a little bit, you will find many discussions concerning good, safe neighborhoods.

lukeache, I completely agree with you. My husband and I have lived in Albuquerque for 11 years and are finally getting to leave next year to start grad school somewhere east of Texas. The poverty here is undeniable and I'm sure both a cause AND effect of this "lowlife element," as well as the alcoholism, meth problems, and disportionately high crime rate for a city this size. The poverty is heart-breaking and I think people who have spent most of their lives here have built up a callous or wear blinders. The sad thing is that nothing changes. There is lots of growth going on downtown, but the homeless problem is the same, and now the homeless are getting pushed further east, into the University area.

The best things about New Mexico - Balloon Fiesta and green chile - are things I don't have to live here to enjoy. It will be nice to come back and visit the friends we have made here once we do leave, but I never want to have to live here again.

I pulled into town about midnight, so I have not been able to see much as of yet. I will venture out pretty quick! I am waiting for the hotel iron to heat up so I can iron and be ready for my interview in the morning. We shall see what happens
