As far as safety is concerned, there is a lot of bias on a micro-provincial scale in Albuquerque.

Some people who live in certain parts of the city seem to think that anywhere south of a certain line is like a Salvadorean ghetto. While it is safe to say that there are bad neighborhoods south of I-40, there are equally sketchy blocks to the north as well.

Fact is, I have lived in the same house in a borderline area for almost 20 years. No break-ins, no muggings, never been shot. Not even a little bit.

Some people are just scared and roll up their windows when the houses and people become browner.

Open your mind, GO SOUTH

abqsunport opined:

> Central and San Mateo is very far south on the city.
> It is no way central in any respect.

I'm curious if others feel this way too. I consider UNM--Knob-Hill
and all along Central from Downtown to San Mateo to be *very*
central to Albuquerque. It may have grown out away from that
area, so *geographically* it's not central (anymore), but after having
lived there for so long, I can't get my brain around picking some spot
around Jefferson and I-25 as the "center."

Also:

You have a way with words. That brought a smile to my face.

I have a friend who lives near the intersection of San Pedro and Comanche. From my perspective that seems impossibly far north and east. To some "Albuquerqueans" that is practically Las Cruces.

the Downtown - San Mateo corridor along Central Ave. IS central Albuquerque. Maybe not geographically but certainly in terms of life... real life.

Comming from the north (Seattle) I find the crime stats a little unsettling as do some other northerners. I do believe gang issues are treated a little different in the south. I am 46 years old and had never seen a car driving down the road riddled with bullet holes. Took two weeks here (no they weren't stickers). Say what you like but gangs are problematic. Northern areas simply do not have the problems that the southern states do. Call me what you like but the stats back it up. do a search on google. Geographically New Mexico is one of the most beautiful states I have been fortunate to live In.

Sorry, but what do you mean by the South? You mean just drawing a line through the middle of the US and calling it North and South? If so, got news for ya....lots of gangs in the Norhern half of the US -- Chicago and Detroit come to mind right off the bat.

That said, no denying that there are some gang issues in Albuquerque. But I've pretty much seen gang issues in every medium to large size city in the US.

I am going to have to disagree with you. Central and San Mateo is the OOOLLLLDDDD Central Part of Albuquerque. To me, Montgomery is Central Albuquerque. Paseo is North Albuquerque. Central is South Albuquerque. Call me crazy.

Who see's things this way????

I have seen things in Albuquerque that I had never seen any other place in the country i.e: Group of young Native Americans fighting each other by that Octopus Car Wash(Central/San Mateo) at 3 pm, this is one of the centralmost points in this city, one of the guys is bloody everywhere, everybody sees it, no one does a damn thing, no cops around. One day, I was walking by San Mateo and Montgomery, I see this guy beat the hell out of another Native like at 3 pm, the guy fell to the ground, I walked by him, he was just laying there, face covered with desert dust, all bloody, I tried to flag down a cop, he did not even look at us. There are parks in Albuquerque where you can walk by in the afternoon and see not one person, but bunch of people just sitting around doing marijuana, crack, meth etc. There is a lot of domestic violence and disturbances in this city because of alcohol and drugs, there are some classic episode of COPS in Albuquerque that show this aspect of the city. One in particular that shocked me is the shootout that took place on the campus of the University of New Mexico, the guy in the wheelchair that shot at the cops and ended up dead a few years ago. This city can be a very chaotic place!
Part of the problem as reported by the radio (770) is that there are only 75 cops on the beat at any shift as that is just terrible. The city council and Mayor need to get their act togeather on the police situation here.

As of San Mateo and Central i know that area all too well as i live next door to Kirtland AFB but i noticed this last bond issue that just passed had monies to improve that intersection and landscape the medians up tp Zuni.....

They had the Asst. Cheif Shultz out the other night answering calls because there were no officers available. Pretty scary if you depend on the police for your personal safety. 75 cops for over 550,000 people. Marty needs to quit making up lies and be forced to answer for these problems. Oh never mind he has made Abq a safer place by putting up illeagal revenue cams and having officers waste time with giving out cititions for plate covers and talking on cell phones.

The real criminals roam the streets with the freedoms to commit all the crimes they care to. Thanks Marty! You da man!

For those of you moving to New Mexico or Albuquerque, I found an article that totally supports my opinions about Albuquerque and New Mexico in general. It is an audio clip about the police blotter in Espanola, NM, one of my favorite towns in this country. Espanola, NM is a town of 10000, in Northern New Mexico, but it is a very busy town when it comes to crime, disturbances, domestic violence etc. New Mexico is indeed a very different place and you will understand why after listening to this I found this hilarious and sad at the same time. It totally supports my theory that alcohol, poverty and drug abuse in parts of New Mexico is epidemic. Click on LISTEN

Albuquerque and New Mexico, like other places, have their positives and negatives. And there are lots of articles and opinion pieces that will support a variety of perspectives. One of the really great things about city-data is the variety of perspectives. But it is not the place to promote or convince others your lone perspective is the only or correct perspective.
