Because it is true. I know lots of single females that live here with not a problem. I also know lots of females that live in CA where I grew up that didn't have a problem either. Facts don't lie. On the other side of the coin we all know people that have been subjects of crime. There are lots of statistics and facts out there that show crime exists everywhere. Are there exceptions? Of course but is not the rule. Most places aren't Mayberry.

So, I am bringing back my old thread because I am again thinking about moving up to Albuquerque. (I am currently still in El Paso.)

I am wondering why Guitarpir says I shouldn't move to Abq.

And I would really appreciate if any women could tell me of they feel safe living in the ABQ area. I currently live in a very safe city, so I am not used to living somewhere where crime against women is a big issue.

Also, I am wondering if ABQ is a bad place for a SWF in her early 30s (no kids) to meet single guys. (There are very few single guys where I live now.) I don't really care what race, but I prefer Hispanic/Latino.

Thank you.

I am a male. But my wife drove 50+ miles every workday from 1998 to 2012, usually by herself, sometimes with other women. Most of that driving was in various parts of Albuquerque.

Yes, sorry, I meant Guitarplr. (I was hoping that he would speak for himself.)

I am not concerned about driving alone in Abq. It's more the living alone part. I probably shouldn't over think it as I have actually lived alone before (years ago) in a city with more crime than Albuquerque, but not too long after I moved out of that city there were 16 women raped at gunpoint in the same neighborhood that I had lived in, so I suppose that really creeped me out. More recently, I read an article about the "Ether Man" rapist in ABQ that was really creepy, and soon after someone told me another story about some serial killer torturing and killing women in the ABQ area... Well, it just scared me, I guess. And, I have gotten used to living someplace relatively safe, since I have been here for a while. It has been nice, although I am more careful here now than I used to be, after some run-ins with some weirdos...

I used to be a single woman living in Albuquerque, and for the most part, I felt safe. I lived in an apartment complex in a nice part of town, and the worst things that happened while I lived there were a shooting (I don't know the details around what happened), many cars broken into (a garage can help prevent this), and a recurring domestic violence situation in the apartment below mine.

As far as being out around Albuquerque, I have never felt too threatened. One evening I was out dancing with a friend, and she was somehow drugged. If I had not been with her and dragged / carried her to the car and driven her home, I have no idea what would have happened to her because she was unconscious for several hours. Some men had offered to buy us drinks. I didn't drink more than a few sips of mine, but she drank all of hers, so I assume that is when it happened. I have no idea whether both drinks were tainted.

You should visit and see how it feels to you. There are also interactive crime maps, sex offender maps, etc, if that will help you. Sometimes it can help to compare cities.

I am curious, if you are happy with crime / weather where you currently live, then why do you want to move?

Albuquerque is probably a fine place to meet single guys. I met my husband here when we were in our 20s-30s. There seem to be an abundance of younger single people here. Most of my single friends have not had any problems with Albuquerque's dating scene.

As much as I love certain things about Albuquerque, I have grown disenchanted for a number of reasons - mainly related to not wanting to raise my children here. We are moving to another city with far better schools and lower crime (and family, which is actually the biggest factor). A friend of mine who also loves living here is getting ready to move now that she has a child.

The previous post that talked about her child being chased by a man feigning masturbation is a familiar story. Two of my cousins had men expose their genitals to them while walking home from school when they were very young. This happened on three separate occasions. The parents in my current neighborhood have colorful stories about other parents showing up at the bus stop drunk to pick up their children. This is in what would be considered a nice / safe neighborhood (far NE heights). It's stories like these that don't show up in crime statistics, but that may impact life here.

Robert Howard Bruce recently admitted to the rapes he had committed in Albuquerque during the early 1990's. He was immediately sentenced to 156 years in prison for those crimes. Bruce still faces cases in Oklahoma and Texas for other crimes he allegedly committed. He will serve all of his time in federal prison.

Does that put it a bit more in perspective? Where were you 20 years ago when Bruce was committing crimes in Albuquerque?

Here is a brief article on the case: "Ether Man' sentenced to 1.5 centuries

I'm not even going to discuss other 'stories' that someone told you about...

And more local news, did you hear about the 15 year old who killed his mother, father and three siblings last night?

Look at the actual situations realistically. Albuquerque is not the safest city in the United States. I have lived here in the area since 1998 with my wife, children and grandchildren. And now retired, we recently decided to continue to stay in this area.

You have to decide your own future.
