I've been accepted to the UNM civil engineering program as a transfer student.
I'm from Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and a little bit concerned about how I'll adjust to living in a bigger city... I hear ABQ is laid-back and the people are friendly. The one big city I'm pretty familiar with is Chicago where the traffic is terrible, but there's lots of stuff to do.
What I know about ABQ so far: red or green chile is the big question, the Sandias are to the east, people's driving skills aren't the best, the culture is a combo of American/Mexican/American Indian, and go Lobos!
Will I fit in??

Reason: Post Edited - Please, no obscene words...
Lots of Midwesterners out here, including me. You'll be fine. I lived in Chicago for a couple years at one point, and moving back to ABQ was a huge relief. This is a great town/state.
Albuquerque is closer in size to Champaign-Urbana than Chicago. I know a whole family who relocated from Champaign-Urbana a couple of years ago and adjusted fine.
You're not just moving to ABQ, you're moving to New Mexico which has many different levels of awesomeness. Get out and explore as much as you can!
Albuquerque is just a large grid with a small but large city feel, you will like it here. Are people here nicer than those from the mid-west or east coast? most deff, you just won't notice it much.

It's dry - very dry, compared to IL. You may not feel the heat because of the low humidity, and may not even sweat, but you'll have to drink lots of water. In the winter, you'll find your skin and sinuses really dry out.
You've already asked the right question - Red or Green. Try Sadies, Camino Real de Ron, and the Frontier.
If you ski - there's Sandia, Santa Fe, Pajarito (Los Alamos), Taos, and Red River. And Enchanted Forest near Red River for groomed cross-country skiing.
