I could probably squeak by in the east mountains or Santa Fe without any A/C except for the use of fans to draw in cooler night air. I am truly envious. :-)

You're absolutely right ABQConvict, we got by out here in the East Mountains without any A/C at all for years and years ... until last summer, that is.

Last summer was miserably hot for too many weeks, even hiding out at the air conditioned Wal-Mart in the afternoons didn't help (I work at home). We bought a "portable" swamp cooler that helped some ... but now we've moved to a house with a full-sized swamp cooler. I'm hoping we won't have to use it at all, but it's nice to know it's there if we need it.

Came back to the thread to say I'm going to have someone come do it next week. Right now, for the first time, I'm uncomfortably warm. (My chihuahua/jack russel terrier loves it though) Of course, I'm wearing a business suit and panty hose just home from work, lol. Nevertheless, I'm too warm and it's time.

Considering we are seeing mid-July temperatures, I'm not surprised you feel uncomfortably warm. I am praying July is not going to be Tuscon temps this year.

Oh, ugh, panty hose are so awful: hot in summer but cold in winter!

But even though I don't have to deal with them any more, as of yesterday I officially give up. We're going to "summerize" the swamp cooler and start it up this weekend.

Check your belt, pump(s), water line to the unit, lube the bearings on the fan and clean/replace your filters.

Stay cool!

It is actually an Evaporative Cooler, it is like a giant humidifier, adds water to the air. On humid days they do not work very well... Here is a thread on the subject: Swamp Coolers vs. Refrigerated Air

Thanks for the info -- and links. Silliest name I've ever heard - I had such a weird picture in my head.
