Opinions please...

We were thinking about a cabin around Colorado Springs, but with the recent worst-fire-of-all-time right by there, I'm thinking of looking elsewhere...

Water would be nice... Swimming/boating/kayaking.. Mountains... Any ideas please share! Thanks

Chama, NM is good, if you don't mind driving a bit farther, the San Luis Valley is really nice.

There is no place to boat or kayak in Ruidoso, or nearby. And there are only a few places suited to white water kayaking on Hacker's list. Lake kayaking is more likely. Durango has Vallecito and Lemon reservoirs which are nice flat water lakes. White water rafting and kayaking can be done sometimes on the Rio Grande between Santa Fe and Taos.
