Default Moving from the swamps of Oregon to Placitas, NM

Can't wait to get out of the rain, grew up in the high desert in California and look forward to all the quirks and meeting new people/exploring.

So we rented a cool adobe in Placitas - can you give me the low down on this town away from town. Is wood easy to find/buy...guess we will need it, funny coming from Oregon..here it's a bit pricey! Husband freaked out about snakes and wants snake bite kits...what else?

Any quirky details about the area in general would be helpful - hubby working in Rio Ranch....we like to fish -where do people go?

Thanks - please don't hog all the sunshine and blue sky! So you SOON!!!!

By all means get a snake-bite kit. We all carry them just in case. :-) just kidding.

Firewood is expensive if you by it by the fireplace load, but if you are using a wood stove, there are woodlots with better rates for the pick-up load. There are many people in New Mexico who rely on wood for heat.

You had snakes in Oregon, probably/possibly more than we have here...

Not worried about bears, bobcats?

I have not had a snakebite kit in over 30 years...

Wilderness enthusiasts often carry snake-bite kits, which makers say can treat a wound until help arrives. Scientists say the kits, which typically include suction devices and sometimes scalpels to drain the wound, may do more harm than good.

Justjulie62, My ex is far more dangerous than the wildlife in Placitas.

Your neighbors should be able to tell you where to get the best deal on firewood. A family from Pecos delivers mine once a year. Vendors are plentiful just as you enter Placitas from I-25.

My mother-in-law recently bought a house in Placitas. They are coming from Seattle. This last month, they found a small family of Bobcats living on their roof. That was interesting.

We live in Placitas....best place for firewoood is at the bottom of the 165 where guys with trucks park and sell it. You won't find any snakes in the winter...or between about Nov-April. But once the heat comes we do have rattlesnakes and other assorted reptiles, along with coyotes, bobcats, etc, especially if you reside past 4 miles up the highway and on the south side of hwy 165, so always keep an eye peeled when its hot.
