A meeting was held a day or two ago to get feedback from local and national experts re an arena and hotel downtown. No mention of other locations or a larger than 12,000 capacity. Let's see what happens, article in the paper said the results of the $700,000 study will be ready in six or seven months. *Sigh...*

But what concerts does a 12,000 arena get that we couldn't have already of gotten through the Journal Pavilion, and all the Casino ampitheatres, etc? Why are we so set on such a small arena????

Also, many touring acts are configured for arenas, and not sheds like the Journal Pavilion. And, the Pavilion only works half year. When an act comes through in the winter, they can play an arena.
An example is the New Kids on the Block tour. Why on earth are they performing in Tingley Coliseum instead of Journal Pavilion. My guess is their staging is for arena floors, not pavilion stages, which can be very different if the group travels with their own stage that has all kinds of risers and effects, which many big acts use. I agree, I wish it were bigger, but to me (and I guess I am in the minority here) better a 12,000 seat arena than no arena. But that's just me. |

If it IS a possibility, let someone like the Maloofs step in and help finance a 20,000 seat building with the promise they will move the Sacramento Kings here. Without that sort of guarantee, how on earth would we build something that big? To build it on the off chance that maybe in 15 years we will be ready for an NBA team is just ludicrous. |

Yup I also wish they would think further into the future, however 12,000 is better than nothing.

I think market studies are showing a 12,000 seat to be more viable. Tucson is building a 12,000 seat arena (the same company. Hmmmmm...). Tulsa built a 17,500 seat arena, Omaha has an 18,000 seat arena, I bet those places have a university basketball team in the arena. UNM has the Pit and U of A has the McKale Center. That's that. |
