I never had a problem with the winds but maybe I never experienced the worst of them. If you don't like the cold then make a point of walking around the old town plaza late in the evening in January, or even during the holidays. When the sun goes down it gets cold pretty quickly, and hitting the teens is not really unusual. Another "worst" time no one has mentioned is during the "new" fire season when the air is filled with smoke, and advisories are saying to stay indoors. But in general, even the extremes in Albuquerque really aren't that bad. A different spin on the "worst' time to visit might be when it's crowded and it's hard to find lodging and the roads are extra congested. Balloon Fiesta in October, for instance.

There really is no worst time. The winters are very manageable, no snow to shovel once the sun comes up ... in the fall you have warm days and cool nights ... low humidity summers ... ABQ may not look its best in the winter, but as winters go, its not unpleasant. Come and have a good time!

Here is a pic I shot on the Jemez Mountain Trail this past week, a pleasant day trip between ABQ and Santa Fe. It was shirtsleeve weather in ABQ but I enjoyed a bit of snow (and spectacular Elk sightings) in the higher elevations of Jemez. This is less than an hour away for ABQ. ABQ is your bedroom. What surrounds it is what makes it so wonderful.

January. Cold like December, but no festive holiday decorations to brighten things up. Everything will be brown and esthetically unpleasing. Good chance of experiencing winds, too, as the cold fronts often come with winds. If you can survive January, you'll be good to move here.

Although I will admit, winter is my favorite season here.

Great photo. Kind of an annoying little watermark in the bottom corner, but otherwise it is beautiful. The SouthWest is such a wonderful part of the country.

The photographer has a right to that watermark...

He's an established professional photographer with a pretty extensive portfolio. I don't blame him for watermarking in a location that deters people from copying and publishing the photos.

Google him and check it out - he has some absolutely gorgeous SW photos.

Holy Bark Beetle infestation! That hillside has been ravaged, but admittedly has a stark beauty.

Is that the crossing of the east fork of the Jemez River, right before the vist of the Valle Grande opens up? If so I have spent many pleasurable days climbing that rock feature on the center left margin of the pic and hiking downstream through the canyon there. A truly beautiful spot.
