Default Brown parks in brown Albuquerque

First, Rybert, thanks for the crack up this a.m.....> International District. Nice.

Second, Trkstp Tina made a valid point (from Maryland no less. Sorry I didn't have time to visit you guys!): You have to get off the beaten path to find most of Albuquerque's great parks. They're tucked into the various subdivisions, making it safe walking for those that live around them. I enjoy checking them out for the change of pace for my girls and to satisfy my curiosity about what equipment the various parks have. Anyone who's visited recently knows the city has spent money on parks. The equipment makes the parks I grew up with in Santa Fe look like two boulders and a stick in a field (come to think of it, many of them were.). I found one park that had a crack in the slide, took a picture of it and sent it to the city. I received an email reply and a call the next day from the guy overseeing maintenance thanking me and letting me know they were addressing the problem.

I feel like many of my posts can be seen as stereotypical "local on defense" so I try to stay as objective as possible. I've called Albuquerque's warts when I see them. It's just this whole "Albuquerque is brown" thing always cracks me up. OK, compared to the upper Northwest or the East coast it's got a lot of brown, but it's hardly a dust bowl, or bland and drab as I've heard people suggest in the past.

I have some great pics of the various parks around town, unfortunately most of them feature my little ones prominently in the photo. Here's an exception:

One of Albuquerque's small and dusty 'joke' parks (Hoffman park, near Wyoming/Menaul):

Hoffman Park is great, as Zia's pic shows. I always thought it would be nice to own one of those solid, brick homes facing the park.

Another residential area with one of my favorite parks is Altura Park, northeast of UNM [sorry, no pics].

Albuquerque has a few nice parks. Most are very small, kind of an afterthought to the surrounding development, but they are plentiful. Some are really quite pleasant. The ones that I know of are anything but dusty and brown.

However, what Albuquerque lacks is a large, central park. I was hoping that the space in uptown to the south of and including the ABQ Uptown Mall would be turned into such a park. Alas, the powers that be didn't go for it. I guess Tingley beach may fill that niche but I have yet to check it out.

I can't really comment on Albuquerque's parks, but the whole area to the northeast is like one big park!

anyone who says, Abq is brown and dusty most of the time has only spent about 2 weeks in the city. It may not always be heaven and the dust and winds in the spring are awful, but otherwise it is beautiful. Just to see the purple mountains at sunset is a sight to behold. RR needs to go back to Raliegh or should never have left.
