Hello i am a 20 years old guy and live in El Paso. I have a part time job and go to college at UTEP. I just can't stand it here, not that it is bad or anything, its just that i want to go out and explore more of this world. I also can't stand my family. I just want to move out. I want go out and try to pull my own weight and eventually make it on my own. Albuquerque sounds nice. It has nice weather, it is a medium size city so its not too big. it is not too far away incase i need to fall back to El Paso.

How is the cost of living? I figure it is a little bit more expensive than El Paso but not too much

How much should i save before heading out?

I know that this might sound stupid and that i should just wait until i finish college but screw it i am going to think this through. I am not sure if i will actually do this anyway.

What parts of Albuquerque are safe but at the same time affordable? I don't really care about what kind of work is available as long as it pays the bills. And of course i might also go to school later when i settle in. I am a Accounting major.

Actually, since its pretty close. I might save some money to go out and explore Albuquerque for the weekend. Check out some neighborhoods, the overall vibe, and go see attractions

I'm not from ABQ, keep in mind, but I'm considering moving there in the future and have visited many times to check it out. There are a lot of threads here on the neighborhoods. At your age and for affordability and safety, check out the apartment rents in the area around Osuna Rd. NE, east of I-25. That would provide relatively easy access to UNM as well.

The longer you stay out of school the harder it will be to return, especially when you need to work to pay bills. Your best choice may be to use your school breaks to explore and take breaks from your family. You could save up your money and do a long road / camping trip in the summer. Being from El Paso you could do winter road trips too, like to Big Bend or South Padre.

Give it a shot, Albuquerque would be a good start for you considering its proximity to El Paso and your family if things don't work out. You will find The vibe in Albuquerque different from El Paso, it has more of a hipster vibe around Nob Hill and the University area. You will also notice a big difference from the border city vibe in El Paso, other than that you will find lots of things similar enough to not feel a huge culture shock. So I encourage you to give it a shot, you may find it comfortable enough to stay, or maybe spring board you to a big city!

Yeah that is what i am saying. Its not too big and far away that will give me a culture shock. Its culture is both different yet retains that southwest feeling. Its a little more expensive yet still affordable. And its climate is great year round.
