I came across some data recently that indicates ABQ is one of the worst cities / metro areas in the country for auto theft, so there is some conflicting data floating around out there.
This was not the link I recently saw (can't seem to put my hands on that one) but this site similarly placed ABQ in the top 10 (worst) a few years ago, corresponding with what I read on the other site:
Albuquerque had half as many auto thefts in 2012 as it did in 2006. I think cars are getting harder to steal and several car theft rings have been busted.
Likewise I don't understand newcomers who claim to like it here, but are Debbie Downers who continually complain about the "property crime problem". Nobody has to move here if they think the property crime rate is unacceptable. I don't think I am trying to spin anything positively when I say it isn't something I think about that much. Just as other places I've lived with worse crime than ABQ, I get insurance, and then get on with my life. Before I moved here 25 years ago I never bothered to find out anything about "crime rates", it never entered my mind. I met some great people who lived here and loved it here, that was enough for me.
If people are concerned about crime, rather than complaining on a forum, they can join a neighborhood watch group, or create one for their neighborhood, join CrimeStoppers, or do any of a number of constructive and empowering things.
Sorry, this sort of "love it or leave it" attitude is one of my pet peeves. Some people *do* realistically have to live here, yet still have gripes about the place or things they wish were better. Maybe you are here on military assignment. Maybe you have family here. Maybe a job opportunity. Telling those people that their criticisms of the city are invalid because they could just leave is just an attempt to shut down dialogue. Doing constructive and empowering things to fight crime is great. But it's not an either-or choice between that and posting on a forum. And who knows, maybe finding this information on a forum is even helpful to people deciding where to live.
I find myself stuck in between the ostriches and the doomsayers on Albuquerque (and Albuquerque crime, in particular) that you find on city-data. Some people will tell you that there's nothing wrong here, tell you that all cities have the same levels of crime, and will attack anyone who says the slightest thing critical about Albuquerque. They're the ostriches, because they bury their head in the sand and won't listen to a negative thing about their fair city. The doomsayers will have you believe that Albuquerque is Juarez North and that you risk being kidnapped if you venture out of your house. Of course, the truth is in the middle and some of the posts on this thread with crime statistics are quite helpful in ferreting that out.

There is no shortage of threads on this topic in this forum, and no shortage of complainers. It is the topic that never goes away, and some of us who've heard it all before get tired of it. I'll quote another person who posted in another ABQ crime thread:

take these things with a grain of salt: it is in the NY Times and the writer isn't basing his article on honest facts, but his own personal views.
It seems like, now that we have the situation in Ferguson, MO. it is "pick on cops week"
