I am a huge supporter of Albuquerque as many of you know, and for Albuqurque to be a better city, it needs a much better downtown. That doesn't necessarily doesn't mean it needs big buildings--but those would help vitalize downtown and help bring a positive image to the locals minds.

Future growth for Albuquerque doesn't mean skyscrapers to make the city. I agree with thise posting that the low-mid rise feel of the downtown area make the city unique to itself. Ever been to London or Paris, the best parts of those cities are the neighborhoods with 4-8 story buildings filled with business, condos, apartments, services, restaurants and small parks. Things like underground or above ground parking garages help keep ground level parking lot sprawl to a minimum. Even the big box stores wouldn't be so bad if their parking went 2-3 stories underground to preserve the pedestrian feel of the area. Shopping like the Q should be surrounded by residential and business oriented buildings all within a 4-6 block walking distance. Infill in downtown is great....miles of retail and asphalt and parking lots and McMansions in ever sprawling Rio Rancho is horrible.

Wink what do you think ABQ needs to make it look like a real city

I'm a transplant from the Mojave Desert. I'm used to the colors of the desert, tan and brown sprinkled with a green. I guess the comedian, SINBAD, said it the best in his opening line, "Albuquerque, where's your grass?? I've seen the parks which are really nice, the freeway architecture is very unique, had not seen those beautiful colors on freeway bridges. I'm used to grey concrete in Santa Ana, Long Beach, and the like. I think planting of trees real trees, not pinon trees, that grown quickly for shade since there is so much sun, would be just like the other cities...I would like to see ABQ look more like an oasis if the water table was not an issue. Bicycle right of ways I would like to see emphasized. Some people are so impatient but like in San Diego, CA and Portland, Or are very bicycle friendly. It is not only cutting gas costs but doing our part to improve air pollution.

Zemindar1 is on a distinguished road
We have lived here six months and have lived in many diverse areas, this town/city is fantastic! Large enough to have everything you need and small enough to enjoy it. We are being transferred in January (can you believe it?) and this is the first time I will so miss a place. My whole family loves it here and the people, I would love to just pack them up and take them with me! Don't complain, you have a perfect little jewel here, just enjoy!

I think Albuquerque looks a lot like an updated version of ancient Babylon with more strip malls and massage institutes. To look more like a real city it would have to have a camel auction yard and some charnel houses. Also a great wall surrounding the whole thing manned by soldiers armed with crossbows would be a nice touch.

Oh, and refuse piles. Definitely more refuse piles.
