Closing on a home in Corrales, and the next step is to find a daycare for my 2.5 year old. I'm within walking distance of the Cottonwood Montessori, and I love the pictures of it/student managed garden and chicken coop? Cool! But I really don't know anything about local schools. Thoughts?
I've heard vague mentions of Escuela del Sol and Los Ninos. Both Montessoris. Doesn't have to be a Montessori. I just want a nurturing, supportive, fun place for him to be while I work from home. Lots of learning opportunities, no learning pressure. Something he loves. This whole "reading by 4 thing" is not impressive to me. One preschool I toured bragged about homework for four year olds! No thanks.
Ideally, something Spanish speaking/bilingual would be great. My son's Hispanic and his babysitter spoke Spanish with him, but I don't speak :-/ I'd hate for him to lose what's been so easy for him to learn. But surprisingly, I don't think there really are Spanish-speaking daycares in Albuquerque. At least not until he's about 4. (Though happy to be wrong!)
Diversity is important, too. Cost and commute are considerations. But it's a lot easier for me to work well if I don't feel guilty about where he is. So not the most important things to me.
We have lived in Rio Rancho about a mile from the Corrales border for about 15 years. I have heard only good things about Cottonwood Montessori over the years.
Two of my great grand-kids were going La Petite Academy, 1501 Barbara Loop Southeast, Rio Rancho, NM 87124 recently for maybe a year and they enjoyed it and they generally learned a lot and got along well with others...
Escuela del Sol Montessori is about a 30 minute drive from Corrales and Los Ninos is a bit closer. I Know nothing about them.

It is obvious to me, my wife and my two adult children who have kids, that the earlier you begin an education, the faster you see results. I also have a local 6 year old and a 5 year old in separate families in this area. The differences are quite apparent about learning early is more fruitful than just running around in circles in day care.
Good luck to you and welcome to the area!

We really liked SpringStone. Clean place with fun activities for the kids. Our son only went 2 days a week, but he did good there. Learned and had fun.

Which SpringStone location did you use, NMHacker? Our daughter went to the one by the airport when she was very small (<2) and it wasn't right for us. There didn't seem to be a lot of engagement or enrichment, at least not with the littlest kids.
She is now 4 and attending Serendipity Day School in Nob Hill, which she loves and so do we. Other great programs - in the central city at least - include Escuela del Sol, A Child's Garden, and Congregational Preschool.

He went to the one on the West Side. They were great there. When we moved to Old Town we took him to St Paul Lutheran on Indian School. Another great program.
He now attends St. Charles Catholic School in 1st grade.
OP Megan81... what did you end up going with? We are starting a similar search soon. Most likely La Petite or Springstone Montessori just based on location, but would consider more centrally/Nob Hill. Hours are a key factor for us.

Serendipity Day School is a great Nob Hill-area preschool that definitely deserves a look...
Sorry to resurrect this, but is there any current recommendations? My 8-month old is spoken to in broken spanish by me, the father, in english and spanish by her fluent mother, and in spanish by the grandmother, which isn't that often. I'd really like to get her into a daycare that was spanish only to start to cement the skillset. How do you find a home daycare and whats the cost? I'm scared of the lack of oversight, but probably shouldn't be.

We found ours on craigslist and could not have been more pleased. The cost we pay comes out to less than $4 per hour, which still adds up to an eye-opening amount, but very reasonable compared to other metro areas.
The entire "spanish-only" request leaves me (and no doubt most of the forumgoers) scratching my head. Even if no one in my family spoke any English, I'd consider it negligent not to expose my child to at least some English, particularly at such a young age, and particularly if I'm paying for it.
