I know folks that have had issues at both hospitals, but have to agree that UNM is probably the better bet for surgery. They have a lot more trained specialists and more resources at their disposal.
My cardiologist was at UNM for about five years maybe starting 10 years ago? (I do not remember) My health plan changed was the reason I had to change, leaving UNM. For scheduled surgery I would consider UNM over your other choice.

I may be needing abdominal surgery soon, after an upcoming CT scan.
My insurance covers both Lovelace and UNM Hospital (in Albuquerque).
Are you sure they don't also cover Presbyterian? All three hospitals have about the same overall rating. UNM is a "teaching" hospital, which means it's more likely to be receptive to newer medical procedures.
Most of the local plans don't include Presby. Only a few high end ones are accepted at Presby. Or that was the case when I was shopping for insurance back in December.

No. Just checked my book. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield Medicare Advantage HMO.
Just Lovelace and UNM for acute care hospitals.

It has nothing to do about "overall rating". It has to do with the policy you have, with many times not always obvious of how the plan works. I had to drop UNM, but Presbyterian was offered. We were in a "Prime Service Area", NFI.

I've had trouble with my BCBS plan at UNM...some services have been covered, but associated services - labs, etc. - may not be and we've had to pay through the nose for those. Make sure you get your coverage confirmed before you act, is all I'm really saying.
