The thought of being in Sacto was good enough in itself. But within a 3 hour proximity or less to SF, Norcal Coast, Sonoma or Napa, Shasta, Tahoe/Reno/Truckee. And being able to take a 'direct' flight somewhere from Sac is such a breeze; not something easy to do from Abq.
It sounds like you'd like Denver more. It has small nearby towns with stuff to do, though much of it centers around outdoor activities. But in Denver you can get your outdoors on and still come home and go to a concert, food festival, neighborhood party, etc. I also found in Denver plenty of 30-50 year old adults without kids to do stuff with.

The flight thing I get. Though I do love the Sunport. It is so easy to get in/out of and I have only once had an issue with a flight when we were re-routed to Phoenix due to a snowstorm so it was a legit issue. And for a smaller airport, I have found flights to be fairly reasonably priced to major destinations.

I'm out working in California right now myself. I see the appeal, but it is a bit overpopulated and I miss the easier access to outdoors in the southwest. I also miss how easy it is to get errands/shopping done in Albuquerque.
