Default Drunk Driving

From today's Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico is no longer in the top 10 in DWI fatalities.State now drops to 17th for 2006.This is not bad considering we were no.1 several years ago.The government's effort over the past several years is no finally paying off.Since this is based on 191 fatalities in 2006,and in 2007 the fatalities decreased further to 176, I think when we get the stats for 2007,we will be even better.

New Mexico used multidimensional approach.New Mexico became the first state to require an ignition interlock device for the first offense. It increased penalties for bars and restaurants that sell alcohol to intoxicated patrons and minors. They also had a very aggresive public campain using television radio and billboards.Residents also have hotline they can call if they suspect a drunkdriver. The police have greatly increased enforcement with alot more sobriety checkpoints. They have even used public humilliation. If you are convicted of drunk driving in New Mexico your picture along with your alcohol level is published in the newspaper in a special supplement that comes out periodically for all your friends and boss to see.

Any improvement is great. Are you involved in law enforcement or do you have a specific interest in reducing traffic fatalities in New Mexico. (Though we should all be concerned). Your state happens to be one of the states I'm targeting for a new program to help reduce injuries and fatalities on roads and highways. I'd like to know how your are involved and if you have anyone in mind that I may want to contact.
sincerely,
sarah

I always thought it was because of the mounted police. Pretty scary after a night of boozing.
