abqsunport informed us:
> The North/South Runway... been shutdown. You will not ever see another plane take off from that runway unless there is an absolute need.
It's OK for landings, right? I last lived in that area in 1999, but I thought that I saw a recent landing there just within the last few months. (I could have been hallucinating, of course.)
I wasn't hallucinating back when I lived under that flightpath.

Hmm, not sure about landing. I would think it would be ok to land if the plane came from the South. However, I think landing is still often avoided because it crosses all 3 of the other runways.
Here is a link to a diagram of the runways:

A little trivia for you non pilots - add "0" to any runway and you have the compass heading. For example, runway 9 is compass heading 90, or due east. The opposite end of any runway will always be 180 degrees in the other direction. At Abq, runway 8 (80 degrees) is runway 26 (80 + 180) or 260 degrees at the other end. We'll talk about declination next semester.
In the old days, GA pilots would fly straight down the runway to make sure their compass was accurate.
And now you know.

abqsunport reported additional information:
> ... ok to land if the plane came from the South.
I wouldn't know about landing from the S since I lived near Cornell & Central in the Ghetto. Planes landing from the N were, at least, a weekly occurrence in the 90's.
I always wanted to be on that plane landing from the N. The vew would have been really cool what with all my naked sunbathing neighbors.

Nope. Just normal, everyday psych majors at UNM.
This was over ten years ago, but I'm sure there is a new set of residents taking advantage of the roof.
Note that I never witnessed this activity unfortunately. Another neighbor did and was temporarily embarassed, but learned to live with it.

Wow... I'll quiz my dad on that later today (he thinks he wants to fly... mid-life crisis ). Thanks for the trivia.
