I agree with the earlier poster. The "war zone" area on the SE side of town is no longer terrible. It is not crime free, but it is no decaying urban wasteland of crime either. For crime I would check out the areas around west central (across the Rio Grande from downtown.) Especially around the Central/Coors area. This area seems to me to be much more slumier with terrible schools, infrastructure, and general community planning.

As long as the cops are willing to go anywhere in the city, I consider the city's crime to be reasonable. There are parts of Miami that the cops don't even want to enter.

Penelope, I think the only "rude" folks I've met so far were in that weird little corner around Coors & Paseo. Not sure why, maybe it's too cluttered with development and they're all stressed

I lived in ABQ for about a yr or less than back from '05-'06....It's a very nice old city, esp Old Town to Rio Ranche and points north. ABQ however is very high in crime, esp the Hispanic gangs to overall drug trade coming up from Mexico. The War Zone, SE part of town, is the worst place by far, almost feels like 3rd world country, mainly old Mexico. Hollywood productions are being filmed there all over due to the tax breaks they are getting, but ABQ is a city that I would ONLY visit, but would never live again....way too much crime, drug trafficing.......I would really think twice if you move there....

More perceptions from an 'expert' resident of nearly an entire year.

or, in other words, 'OMG, Mexicans and the War Zone!!1!'

Not to mention reviving a three year old thread.

ABQConvict...I have read many of your comments and you seem to consistently defend the element that is the root of most of the problems that plague Albuquerque. Paulisphotoman is spot-on with his mention of the Hispanic gangs and drug trade in Albuquerque. Before you discount me (as you did him) as someone that doesn't know what I'm talking about, I grew up in Albuq so I think I qualify as someone that knows the area. From the time I was 5 I lived in the NE Heights, attended K-12 in private schools (thank God) and graduated from UNM. During my college years I lived south of the Univ near Central Ave. It's common knowledge Moderator cut: Please no racial overtones, no name calling, bashing or inappropriate language. Sorry, but that's just a fact. I know you don't like hearing that, but the statistics don't lie. The farther away you live from the areas that these two so-called "minorities" occupy, the safer you are. We have never lived in the city of Dallas for that very reason. We have always lived in the suburbs and each time we move, it's farther out. People talk about where the "good schools" are and where the "bad schools" are...the quality of the schools in any given area is directly related to the quality of the people living in that school district. You live in a gang-banger neighborhood, guess who your kids are going to be going to school with? Future gang-bangers!! So anyone moving to the area that cares about their kids should seek out the most affluent neighborhood and if they can't afford a house there, rent an apartment so that your kids can go to school with other kids whose parents are 1) present and taking care of them 2) more than likely educated and employed 3) teaching them how to be respectful and responsible citizens and 4) place a high value on their childrens' education. We moved to one of the most affluent neighborhoods in a Dallas suburb for that very reason...our son was in junior high at the time. We wanted him to attend a high school where the kids were planning on continuing on to college and becoming something. Kids are a tremendous influence on eachother, and if your kid is surrounded by deadbeat criminals, guess what they are going to most likely turn into? Now you're gettin' the idea.

One more thing...I have lived away from Albuquerque for 25 years, but my family still lives there. While visiting there one time, we drove through a somewhat shabby neighborhood in the SE Heights and I noticed several houses that had religious shrines in the yards, mostly shrines of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I asked my sister about it, and she said people put those in their yard to keep the gangs from attacking them or painting graffiti all over their property. Apparently the gangs are afraid to mess with the man upstairs...but that told me something about the extent of the crime problem Albuquerque has to deal with.

Mexican is not a race. Mexican is a nationality

Latino is an ethnicity

The "war zone" isn't that bad. I've never felt threatened even driving a new Porsche. I did feel a little uncomfortable driving one of my trucks in the south valley earlier today. That area around Bridge and La Vega is where I was.
