I wouldn't say that people are incredibly NICER per se in the warmer regions of the country, however, more laid back is generally an experience I can confirm (especially in smaller big cities like Albuquerque or San Antonio).
JRod, I don't think you or I could think more eye-to-eye and along the same lines as this.
I wrestle with this constantly. Why, why WHY did I give up a temperate place that I love to return to the cold? Why would folks who don't love the winter (and there are those who do love the winter) or cross country skiing / ice fishing, etc., live in cold regions???
And yes, usually the main reason is family. Secondarily is familiarity (they are comfortable with their city/area and are just too lazy to really want to uproot and move). And I get that. (Lazy is probably the wrong word...it is just that moving is hard and a big deal, and many people don't want to go through all of the hassles).
Last night, we were at my parents' house for Easter. My mom was so happy to see her grandkids, to play with them, spend time with them, etc. Of course my dad was too. And you know what? I would have to be a soul-less, unconscionable b**b to not recognize that and to not at least somewhat factor that into my decision of where to live. Yet, I temper that with knowing that my parents are kind, decent, loving people who wouldn't wish for us to live somewhere when we'd much prefer to be elsewhere. Yet, it does come into play (family) and to say it doesn't is probably selling the situation short (not saying you or I are saying it doesn't).
But it is hard. I feel you on the warm / temperate weather. I look at ABQ's 10-day forecast right now...every day in the 70s; nearly perfect weather. Meanwhile, things here are stuck in the 30s, 40s, snowy still, etc. And when the nice weather gets here (and it WILL get here...I think)...you've gotta hang on to it so deeply because it could disappear again by late September - your window is just so much more brief. And it IS a big deal to outdoor lovers...I just love being outside. I love the outdoor air. The feel of the sun (on not 3 layers of winter clothes). It really is hard to give up once you've got it in your veins.
JRod, you seem to be a young fellow who likes sports. Do you ever read Bill Simmons, a columnist on ESPN's website? He is a Boston native (loved it like I love Milwaukee) but ended up in L.A. Once someone wrote in to him and asked since he loved Boston so much how long it would be until he moved back there, and he replied something like "eventually", but that he was addicted to the everyday weather of L.A. He said something like "good weather is addictive like a drug"...and I couldn't agree more. Now ABQ doesn't have an L.A.-type climate, but in some respects, it is even better, as it offers more variation and some winter but still is very temperate.
Sounds good JRod, offer is appreciated! My BA is a general Business Administration degree and I have experience in management, marketing, etc., etc., etc. I am a kind of "dime a dozen" type of professional (not that I sell myself that way in interviews - obviously!), but what I mean is that I don't have a master's or an engineering / law degree, etc.
I could have a job very soon in ABQ, however, I need it to be a particular salary level to make things make sense for my wife and I. Unless relo assistance were involved, moving is expensive, and with my wife as a stay at home mom, we can't afford a pricey move if the salary isn't one that re-stabilizes things shortly thereafter. Thus, salary-wise, I need to be a bit pickier than I was say 4 years ago.
Good luck to you with that. I know it can be a pain, especially from a distance.
Also great to hear you are a Brewers' fan!! I am a big Brewers' fan, and have great times any time I am able to hit Miller Park for a Brewers' game.
You would LOVE Isotopes games and Isotopes Stadium. One of the nicest minor league ballparks in the nation...very good place to see a game, and the prices are great considering it is Triple A.
