Out here in the E Mtns we have a softener.

In the summer it is set as high as 30, in the winter, we can get it down around 12 (the softener setting is supposed to equal the water hardness - we get a letter with our water bill ea month telling us what the latest test numbers are).

It beats stinky sulfur water. Where we lived before there were parts of the area where the tap water was so smelly it was hard to drink.

I have a black truck with hard water spots on the hood from last spring when the water sprinklers sprayed it.

You need some acid. A few local detailers have it.

Finish Line was a pretty good place, but they have since burned to the ground. Replaced by a cash checking place and a nail salon... sad.
