Hard water in ABQ??
How hard is the water in ABQ? Do people here have water softeners? If so, do people here use salt for their softeners or do they use the salt-free tanks?

Water is pretty hard here.
Imagine salt free is the way most people go. A cartridge-type filter is not uncommon.
Most people don't bother with a water softener.

Yeah, my family drinks the water just the way it is and enjoys the teeth stregnthening minerals it provides! It isn't too uncommon for people to have water softeners though.

The water is extremely hard in Albuquerque. We lived there for over 5 years. If I had it all to do over again, I would have gotten a water softener. It really just ruins your faucets, sinks, etc after awhile.

Ruins your faucets and sinks? I have some leaky faucets is that why? I always just thought they got leaky on their own.

Not talking about leaks. Talking about the deposit build up.

I think water conditioners are good. I was only in my house for 7 months and the water started to ruin the toilets with that hard sediment. I got a good deal on a whole house system from the Micropure guys. Awesome R.O system even hooked up to my ice maker.

I really have to do something about my hard water this year. It sucks having to crawl up on the roof a couple of times a summer to put new pads in the swamp cooler.
Does anyone know of a smaller local company that does the large filter cartridges at the curbside?

Would imagine installing a whole-house water softener would be old hat for an experienced plumber.

we lived outside of Belen, the water was the hardest of anyplace we have lived. It was hard to get anything really clean, the glassware was all filled with sediment and the toilets were impossible to keep the rings away..It might have been one of the worst things about the area.
