Greetings,

I am PCSing to Albuquerque and trying to find a great area to live in. I have several kids who will be in both elementary school, and middle school while I am living there. I am debating buying, but the most important factors are great schools and safe areas to live. Neighborhoods? Things to do. Excellent schools (at least 8 out of 10 rating. I would also not like to be further than 30 minutes from Kirkland AFB if possible. I am open to any recommendations. Thank you all for your help.

Check out Kirtland AFB Information Central. You'll be able to connect with families, retirees, employees, associated with the base. They'll be more than happy to help you find information about neighborhoods and schools.

We originally moved to this area 15+ years ago when my wife transferred to Kirkland AFB. We bought a house in Rio Rancho. We had a few families in the neighborhood who were stationed at that Kirkland AFB that time.

I seriously reccomended against considering purchasing or renting in Rio Rancho if your commute is KAFB. There's a lot of RR apologist's (who live there), but anyone who knows better would also reccomended against that commute. Consider the NE heights area, four hills, Carnuel, Tijeras, or Cedar Crest.

I work with active duty personal on base and they all live in the east mountains and find the commute easy.

BTW, it is Kirtland Air Force Base, not Kirkland.

First off thank you all for the fast response. Typo about Kirkland vs Kirkland, I must have been thinking Costco brand of AF Bases, my mistake. It looks like NE is the safest area, with the best schools, and closest commute. Still have a few months, so keep the suggestions coming, very helpful. Also things to do with kids, and if you have any elementary schools/middle schools you all recommend.

It would help if you mentioned your budget.
